Ford 427 SOHC engines

  1. Let's not forget that mopar was developing their own ohc engine at this time. It was still in the testing stage when nascar was invited to take a look. The plan was for nascar to see the engine and ban all ohc engines. Mopar was not close to releasing the engine do to lifter retainers breaking. Rather than rush to develop replacements and be months late into the season they thought a good scare would do the trick. This saved mopar both time and money. It is believed after they saw what was going on they banned all the ohc engines. The scare tactic worked they just didn't figure the hemi would get banned also. Oldsmobile was working on one too that I believe was 500 inches.
Nascar never figured mopar would ever offer the hemi in a production car. Mopar got the last laugh. Nascar was obviously a slow learner thinking mopars winged cars wouldn't go into production either. They were really scared after banning winged cars with a hemi for the 71 season. They never imagined a 340 powered wing car could compete and when one did they were shocked.
The gen three hemi was also banned from nascar. It happened after a witnessed test session. The cars were too fast. It would become a unlevel playing field. At least nascar is consistent knocking mopar down.

They were always too expensive for me to even bother looking at. The Metro truck mechanic down the alley had a 63 with a SOHC 427. Man that thing was loud and had stock mufflers too!

Back in the 60s, the mechanic at the local Mr. Softee ice cream truck garage, Jim owned one (44th and Post streets in Lawrenceville). It was a 63 Galaxie fastback 427 SOHC. It was white with red interior. It had buckets with openings in the backs. I was young then and he took time to show us youngsters the difference between overhead cams. You could hear him coming to work 10 blocks away.. It wasn't real crazy sounding but it had a real heavy tone. I remember as soon as he let the clutch out, it would just throw you in the seat and go, the engines rpm wouldn't change at all.. Back in those days, you never knew what was behind all those closed garage doors in all those alleys..
