Changing oil for the first time in my truck, and found a screen in the canister instead of a typical filter. Anyone else seen anything like this?
Use to be common in industrial and truck applications. Wash and reuse the element. There are several current high performance filters using that today. You can get the elements in various micron ratings.
System 1 is similar. Different screens for catching the big chunks.... screws onto a standard holder.
Found one of those recently in my Pa in law's 8N tractor......it is the air filter. We unwound it, blew it out, and put it back in. From all the stuff in it, looks like it did pretty good....
I worked on a military Jeep that had the same set up, it had a hand crank on top that you turned and it was supposed to scrape the screen clean and drop the sludge into the pan so it came out when you drained the oil !! Neat things they did back in the day
You have to remember that if you go over 50K on an engine with that type of filter on it you probably had enough bragging rights to get you photo standing beside your car in the local weekly paper. The quality or effectiveness of that stuff is no where close to the Wix or other top brand cartridges we have now.
