When my brother bought his new 1958 Chevy Impala in November 1957, we were all totally impressed. He sold the old Model A Coupe we were going to build as a street legal gas coupe with a 283 SBC and dual quads. But, he had other plans for his instant racing at Lion’s Dragstrip and locally. This new 58 Impala was well stocked with a 348 three carbs, and 280 hp.

It was a one of a kind model created by GM just for that year. The body and custom touches made the Impala stand out from all of the other years of Chevrolet coupes and sedans. The three most interesting factory custom designs were the cool roof top scoop outlet. Then there is the rear side scallop vent design and finally the new Impala crossed flag emblem. There are plenty of other items that made this Chevrolet model stand out from all of the rest.

The body was no longer pointy and plain. It just looked like a real custom car that we would see at car shows. But, the engineers did not skimp on the power to back up the looks. 315 HP was the top power 348 model, but the wait list was long as ½ year or longer. So, the dealers had the 280 hp models in stock.

It did not take long to accept the accolades of the new car and designs that stood out. The designers had the right idea, we wished the scoops actually worked. That would have been very cool. This 58 Impala just reeked of custom touches inside and out.

We enjoyed the power this Impala had as we were successful at Lion’s Dragstrip in the A/Stock class.

It was pure nervousness, but I did catch them just before the final finish line lights. An A/Stock trophy! No, that blue Buick was not my dad’s cruiser. I was lucky to catch him as he was a terror in this stock class. He was very quick off of the starting line. We all improved and the winning races weren’t as bad as this one looks in later races.

I'm working up just the perfect heater for my 34. This enameled badge was found when I went with my dad on his weekly dump crawl 40 years ago. Has a threaded stud on the back.

 

'48 Pontiac. Maybe incorporate them into the door panels if I ever put interior in my coupe.

 

This little bauble comes from a 48 Chevy passenger car grill.

 

In 2012 my brother and I went to the Concours 'd Elegance at Monterey. I could fill a page of this thread with all the cool name plates and art deco emblems! This is me taking a photo of an extremely shiny black Allard emblem .
