Agree, I also have a machined it, we set a very small pile of chips on fire w/ torch just to see what we were dealing with, huge flash from small amount, when machining, flooded w/ coolant and I did all the mag myself, as I did not want any problems, also machined alot of ***anium, not so volatile, machine likes the high chrome stainless also did carbon fiber and Kevlar, ALL a learning process. Had the good fortune to do alot of KOOL stuff in my shop, big part of my work was prototype, worked w/some racing Divisions, that work was fun for me, took in the bread and ****er work for my employee's to keep them busy and pay the bills.

Indy car and most of the "upmarket" open wheel /sports car road race series (Formula 1 etc) still use real magnesium wheels and there are still foundries in the US that cast mag (I found five on the first page of a search). Lite Metals of Ravenna, OH do a lot of sand cast magnesium and have been doing so since 1844 (Yep 172 years in the business). When I worked for John Force we were using mag castings for the superchargers. There are also a lot of OEM manufacturers using mag castings in new cars, the dash support structure in Mustangs for one, so mag casting is alive and well in the US. Real Rodders Wheels have some of their styles available in mag as well (at a substantial price premium) .

Interesting to read this and happy that some niche foundries survived, back in the 80's we did not have the internet for a source yet (a big positive today). Think you hit the nail on the head, High End, No $$$ Limit products, back when I was involved, was not thinking or even dreaming how the Far the High End, No Limits $$$ Racing would evolve. Into early 90's, I manufactured some different race car parts, small part of my business$$$ gross, my product liability insurance was cancelled, got ****d w/ different insurance, because I was cancelled, been my experience that anything w/ that "R" word = $$$, signed and agreed to NO race parts manufactured, I had to provide insurance proof w/ various industrial customers of mine to meet their requirements to be their vendor, it's all these things that make a legitimate business shop rate high, and the one surviving foundry that I dealt with till 2010 was struggling, they too are now closed.

@jbob1944 Try JD wheels. I have bought several set from them and they are very nice for the price. not real Halibrands but for less that 500 bucks for a set you cant beat them.

  7. Extinguishing a Magnesium fire is exciting to say the least. We rolled up on a garage fire one morning about three A.M.. No visible power lines to the structure, fully involved. Hit it with two 1 1/2" lines and the most bright white flash instantly developed. We shut down the lines, homeowner stated that the garage was used by the grandfather for small engine repairs with a lot of leftover parts in it. We protected the house and let it burn itself out as we had no foam available that would extinguish it available.

One split second of bad judgement causes an ugly situation to turn into a perfect storm.
Introducing water on a magnesium fire is akin to pouring gasoline on a gasoline fire.
    I have experience.

    Edit
I have a little experience with magnesium.

These are new aluminum ones from Summit they are sprayed with graphite lube from the hardware store.

Those came out really nice. Who is the manufacturer of them, or are they actually Summit brand? I looked through Summit's on-line wheels, but never did run across them. Thanks.

Are Halibrand-style solid still available new anywhere, in 15”?

Are small-window style available new wider than 4.5”. I see American Rebel has 4.5’s new.
