Would anyone be able to help me decode this engine? SGI 5.7 D148 Reman# 53324 14093638 V0419PJJ on the front of the block on the machines surface is GJE184015 I appreciate it, I been having troubles finding info on this guy Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
SGI" was abbreviation for Spheroidal Graphite Iron which is the same as we call Ductile or Nodular iron Is what I learned Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ya I got the basic info on it. I’m trying to narrow it down further Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Spheroidal graphite cast iron. Fancy name for ductile cast iron. Edit: Ok...................too slow.
Another thing didn’t these have larger journals? Or are these a small journal Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The letters on the partial VIN are confusing...maybe that G is the number 6? that would make it a Cadillac? J is 1988 E is Linden, NJ, but they were making front wheel drive cars in the late 80s, I think.
Thanks squirrel, I’ll get a mag glass and look a bit closer tomorrow. Sure looks like a G so that would be very odd Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
also the D 14 8 casting date means the block was cast April 14, 1988, while the 0419 assembly date means it was assembled 5 days later.
looks like a traditional number. You old guys should recognize it right away, the GJE is a jet engine, General electric Jet. Manufactured in 1958. Used in gloster meteors. Exported to england during the Korean war.
Now there is a patch of hair missing where I’m scratching my head [emoji23] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Casting number shows up a 14093638 Small Block V8 1987-1995 350, 2 bolt or 4 bolt, roller or flat tappet cam, 1-piece rear seal That from this page https://www.chevyhardcore.com/news/reference-chevy-engine-block-casting-numbers/ Searching shows that that casting number was machined for roller tappet cams or had less machining and ran a flat tappet cam in trucks. V0419PJJ = V Flint 04 April 19 19th day PJJ = not in the regular suffix codes, Possibly a truck engine?
Thank you for you’re help. That’s kind of what I thought when I was looking up PJJ. I’m gonna see if the heads are any good Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
From what I am reading Roller = came out of a car flat tappet = came out of a truck. That may not always hold true but might get you closer or send you in the right direction. Kind of like the 010 block in that it could come either with 2 bolt or 4 bolt mains depending on what rig it went in at the factory. When you check the casting numbers on the heads that might tell you more too.
Ohhhh duh duh duh. Now I remember reading about this. It is a four bolt main one piece rear seal. I will have to read more on it. Someone was telling me to look at the valley pan for tapped something. I can’t remember exactly Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A bit of info here but you have to just take what actual info you can use. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech-general-engine/29640-please-help-me-identify.html Pretty solid block and head casting number here. https://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm
if you pull the intake, and look at the valley, it will have a "spider" which holds roller lifters in alignment, if it's a roller cam engine. If it's a flat tappet engine, it won't have the spider, and the bolt holes that would hold in the spider might not be tapped. you already know it's a 1988 engine, from the casting date code. The partial VIN will tell you what it came from, if you can't find the PJJ code in any listing of suffix numbers for 1988 GM vehicles. The lists available on the internet are usually only for one make, and the engine was used in several different makes. If it were from a Chevy, the partial VIN would start with the number 1, but it doesn't, so my guess is you'll probably not find the PJJ code anywhere on the internet.
