Technical Want to go with higher Gearing (FOUND 'EM THANKS!)

Those 2.45 gears would be perfect with a Turbo 400 with a 2.75 first gear set. I had a 2.56 with one behind a big Pontiac 462 and man was that car a badass street machine.

He just contacted me and said he was going to check to day! Hope he does, he has a lot of nine inch rear ends.

You may have to go to a 9 1/4 Ford rear end pumpkin out of a Lincoln. The 2.47 is common in them, but you would have to modify your housing and go to 31 spline axles and 5x5 bolt pattern.

Before you buy those gears I would ask where they came from and if the top rib on the pumkin may have a curve on it. Good chance they came from a 9 3/8 and the guy thinks its a 9". Could you just get larger rear tires ?

He's looking to go 190s. Drag racing fronts are okay for that speed and some more. He wants to change the pumpkin in his 9-inch. Chrysler, Nash, Locomobile and Auburn sets would require a whole rebuild of the rear end.

 

If he is running a front runner now, tallest you can get is 28". I would bet he is close to that height now. To go taller, you have to use the LSR tire designed for land speed in a 30" tall tire, but has a 18" rim; $740 each...

 

Racing is an expensive hobby. Finding some gears may/may not prove difficult. Then you have to decide whether to rebuild the existing rear pumpkin or build a second one and buy those parts. From what I have seen, almost ......if not all factory 2.50 rears were 28 spline open differential. Is that compatible with his current axles? It's not as simple as it might seem. The costs may rival the cost of new tires......and he can always offset some of the cost by selling what he already has. You are right that the tires are expensive. I guess he will decide what works best for his needs.

 

So we run M&H 22 x 3.50 15 front runners and Goodyear Eagle 28 x 4.50-15 on the rear. 9" 31 spline open diff, Going with the taller gearing and everything else the same it is going to gain us a lot more speed at 6000 rpm. Ran 181 at 6100 (7000 Red Line) but was maxed at 15 lbs of boost. Also increasing the pulley on the blower a touch to give more room there as well. Trying to push our current record into the mid 190's. If everything lines up again with Salt condition, weather and ME, we may be able to push that 200 window. We will unleash hell and see what happens!

Going to a taller tire in a roadster doesn't help the aero. Looks like Wally's figured that all out.

 

Now I’m confused! At your current gearing and going to your 7000 rpm red line, you would be going 207 miles per hour! If your car ran out of power at your current gearing, it going to run out of power quicker with higher gearing, in my way of thinking.
I do understand you ran out of pressure on your blower are going to fix that to give you more power. Are you wanting to limit your rpm to the 6000 range?

What really held me back was that I was maxed on Boost at 6000rpm, engine builder recommended not exceeding 15 lbs. Had plenty more in the engine just didn't want to hurt it. Ran it up there and tried to maintain it. It ran super strong. My main focus was the boost gauge, oil pressure and rpm's. There's a lot going on as you can imagine. With taller gearing, 2.50, I won't have to even get close to Red Line and at 6000 we should be able to reach 199.9 At 6200 we should reach 206.6. We realize these are just calculations but we use them to know what we need to turn. Lot's of variables come into play.

We are also going to change the pulley on the ProCharger in an attempt, again in theory, to slow it down a touch and not max out boost at those rpm's.

Would LOVE to go 200 but our main goal is to push our record into the 190's!

Is the rear axle fixed, or is there any suspension travel?

 

D/Blown Gas Rear Engine Modified Roadster record should be about 260-70 mph.
Gevo’s Rears and Gears has always had what I needed.

Well reality says different, all the current Bonneville and El Mirage B/GRMR records aren't close to 260-70 mph.

A lot of factors play into it, the (A) at Bonneville is a real puzzle? Scratch my head on that one. Hope to move our D record much higher next August, but we will have to wait and see, keep you're fingers crossed. Gas RMR records are all higher, D for example is 243.618 set 8/10. with A being the fastest at 273.393 set 8/09

Fixed, ZERO travel. Tough on the tow to start and back to pits after a run. Beats you up! Trying to design a dolly to put under the rear with suspension. I'm getting too old to get beat up!

 

I was just wondering if there was a chance of one inch of suspension relocation. Going from a 28" to a 30" tire, that would add an additional inch of air under the rear of the car. As one guy mentioned earlier, probably not advisable. If the rear end could be raised/chassis lowered one inch, you would maintain the ride height you have now. Continue to regular scheduled programming...
