    I believe that's not a 2 stroke, it's a flathead.

That one is a flathead , but they made the BSA Bantam from 1948 to the 70s, and a 175cc 2 stroke version of the BSASunbeam/ Triumph Tigress . BSA actually made two stroke bikes from 1929 to 1979 alongside the four stroke production.

I think this could be at Dragway 42 West Salem, Ohio. I remember seeing these guys there in "61", "62".

    Hello,

Having been an avid early drag racing movie film person, this is one rare film shown. It is unfortunate that there isn’t any more information about the film. It was shot from the spectator’s side of Lion’s Dragstrip, where we all gathered at one time or another. We did not have a telephoto lens on our old 16mm film camera. So, from this “down the dragstrip” location created long distance away films.

Either the person taking the film was standing directly on the drag strip or just steps away or he had a telephoto lens on his camera. The action film gets an up close and personal effect at the end.

The orange and black roadster is the Dale Ambrose A/H Class Roadster from the mid to late 50s. a part of the Ike Iacono Racing Team.
upload_2022-7-21_4-34-30.png The blue 555 roadster was once owned by Mickey Waters and Dean Murray. Waters and Murray (California) Sky Blue from 1955-1958

So, the short film clip had to be at Lion’s Dragstrip in the 57-58 time period. As it was sold in late 1958

The powerplant was usually a GMC 6 cylinder in the roadster and coupe. They were all orange and black paint with the numeral 99 as the specific number. But, each drag strip had their own window/body panel numbering system to keep track of the racers in the different classes.

Dale Lambrose ran this roadster (99 Jr ) as a teammate to Frank "Ike" Iacono's '34 Ford Coupe (99), with both running GMC sixes on fuel.

In the background, one could see Mr. Childers and his White 53 Pontiac Ambulance near the Orange timing tower.

Brissette Modified Roadster Class, Orange Lions Timing Tower and the White Pontiac Ambulance.

So, the story shows it is Lion’s Dragstrip during the 1957-58 season, since the blue roadster was sold in 1958 to an out of state owner and changed in a different modification.

@jnaki The Waters & Murray roadster and the white ambulance can be seen in a longer version of that film I posted in this link https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/lions-1956.1182296/ The YouTube links have been taken down:mad: But if you click on the Facebook links "In grey" you can see the video. It has a Getty images water mark on it, but you can still see the blue roadster being pushed down the return road as well as LOTS of other cars which I'm sure you'll recognize the films are dated Jan 1st, 1956.

    Hey S,
There are no links, just an ad to join a private group. Not my thing...

But, you can pull out the direct link to the video feed if you are a part of that private group.

  18. Let's get this thread back on track! I'm going to be building a street roadster soon and I need all the influence I can get! I have the 29 Ford roadster body, engine, some suspension stuff and lots of cool parts to use. Anyone building a A/SR these days? Let's see what ya got going!

Sounds good, what era will that be, always good to pick a year so all the bits match. Start a build thread so we can follow along. Bob

Stole this first pic off of here. 2nd pic is how I found the car in a junkyard in 2014. 3rd pic is how it looked before the Caldwell's had it, had a feature in a 1960 Hot Rod. Last pic is how it looks today, restoration to it's Hot Rod time frame almost done. Still needing the proper tires, slicks. Oh, the young guy in the Hot Rod magazine pic owns it now! cadwell motor co pipes.JPG DSC_0210.jpg 13-1.jpg imagejpeg_0(1) (1).jpg

  22. Very cool project. Towel City should be able to help you out in the tire department.

I thought a racer with a */SR designation had to be left hand steered (in USA). You show the driver seat placement centered in the car. That would make it an Altered Roadster like my avatar.

I’m not smart enough to answer that. But the 555 was center steer and the 99jr was left hand. I assume they raced in the same class. 22jr was also center steer.
The seat was just set on the chassis because it kept falling off lol

Mike Waters went on to boat racing at Marine Stadium in Long Beach for quite awhile in the 5 liter class. Later in life he returned to his roots with Dry Lakes/Bonneville time trails. He was very successful with his new partner Dana Wilson. Both entered the Bonneville 200 mph club and Dirty 2 club in a roadster #369 they built. They were both officers in the SCTA for years. Mikes son Greg very successfully continues to race their roadster today.
Dean Murray also returned to El Mirage and Bonneville with a roadster he and a gentleman named Altman built. The triple nickel 555.
