Thanks, Gary. I was hoping to do a little at a time while driving it occasionally, but it'll be a while before I can drive it again.
Originally, I looked at doing some machining on transmission pieces so I could keep the torque tube. When I first mocked up the trans, it was easy to see that keeping the trans as is and go open drive was best.
My coupe has split bones ( Chassis Engineering ) . I used a doug nash 4+1 there and there was no other option. Stay tuned for the cab repair; There is a ton of rust repair on the cab. Thanks for your comments.

My frame had that same kind of crack under the passenger side u bolt. Someone had welded it up a long time ago and then put angle iron on top to support the cross member. The same angle iron metal was used for a homemade trailer hit as well. That hitch was belt to hell as well by someone trying to drag or rip something out of the ground. My guess is they were using these trucks to pull stuff they shouldn’t of been. Gotta love these old field fixes. lol

More work on the torque box replacement.
IMG_1759.JPG I had to plug some rivet holes that didn't line up and re-drill them. I backed the hole with copper and tig welded them shut.
    IMG_1760.JPG
Holes drilled and plates installed. I used a plum bob to transfer the frame centerline to the bottom plate.
IMG_1761.JPG I added 2 reinforcement pieces to the inside of the bottom lip because the frame was a little thin. I took Christmas off, so I have to weld them in place tomorrow.

IMG_1762.JPG Started welding in the reinforcement pieces.
IMG_1763.JPG I chamfered the holes so the weld builds from the bottom.
IMG_1774.JPG almost ready for the powder-coat.

  6. Looking good, Joel - I like the lower lip support and I will probably do the same on mine even at this late stage in the game ......

I didn't do it on my coupe , but that frame had not been out of the garage for a very long time. I did a little repair in the kick up areas in back, but other wise nothing. Besides, I don't want my grandson to inherit a piece of crap .:D

I picked up the frame yesterday and put it back on the spinner to start assembly. I rolled the rear axle under it and bolted the spring to the crossmember . This makes the frame difficult to rotate, but it's still possible.
IMG_1793.JPG IMG_1795.JPG I'm lining up the wishbone front mount to ensure rear end is square with the frame.
    IMG_1796.JPG
I used racket straps to simulate ride height. Next is installing the front axle and check wheel base.

IMG_1797.JPG Rear is square and front is square with the frame and The dimension kingpin hole to rear axle is the same on both sides. It looks good so far.
IMG_1798.JPG The wishbone mount is clamped in place; I just need to transfer the holes and drill the frame.
IMG_1799.JPG All I have to do for the front is bore the hole for the ball mount. The soapstone marks are the where the edges of the block is supposed to be when I'm done. Eventually the block is trimmed to the cap shape and welded to the plate. I'll also have to cut clearance for the wishbone to move in the front edge of the plate.

  16. Final alignment should be a snap as square as you have everything going off of the frame and it being squared also. Good looking foundation for a soon to be spectacular vehicle.

I hope so, however, I am moving cautiously when locating the hole for the wishbone socket. Thanks for your encouraging comments.

The rear wishbone mount is done.
IMG_1800.JPG IMG_1802.JPG This is the first shot at locating the ball mount socket. The hole is undersize with a 45 deg. cut at the top.
IMG_1804.JPG The cut matches the angle on the tip of the socket piece.
    IMG_1803.JPG
This is how I'll install it to check location. If the axle is still square with the frame, all i have to do is open the hole to the finish size. If the axle is off square, I have enough material to move the hole left or right.

Looking good man. Are you planning on triangulating your rear wishbones, or did I miss that?

    Nice work, Joel.
Can I share a thought with you (all). If you added two tabs to the front parts of the rear radius arms, sticking inwards, towards each other, so they overlapped and then bolted the two radius arms together, it would stop any tendency to bend the two ears where the bolt goes through the heim joint.
Just a thought, can anyone else understand what I'm thinking?

I have a tab welded to the right side bone and a "torque arm" that fits between that tab and a bracket that bolts to the diff. housing. It is a kit from HRW that makes the wishbone mounting plate and the slide in axle kit that I used. https://www.hotrodworks.com/

That's an interesting idea, Mart. I'm going to look at that when I can get the trans. back in and the driveshaft made. Thanks for your input.

IMG_1806.JPG The wishbone mount is finished machining and locating on the plate; all I have to do is weld it to the plate. You can see the sharpe marking the clearance cut in the plate. It needs to be welded before I cut on it. Then I can paint it.
BTW the wife and I got vaccine shots today.

  27. Wow! That frame came out nice.
That’s what I wanted to achieve with my pieced together frames, but it wasn’t destined to happen.

I've been working on the transmission. I tore it down to replace gaskets and seals and inspect for wear. I'll probably replace the syncro rings and maybe the reverse idler gear; otherwise it looks pretty good. I mocked up the empty case to get a driveshaft length.
IMG_1814.JPG IMG_1815.JPG The angle iron is because I can't find the water pumps ..... Aaaa the golden years.

I finally finished the wishbone mount and rattle canned that and the front shock mounts.
IMG_1819.JPG IMG_1820.JPG I put this copper weld through where the pieces are against each other. Better than nothing I guess.
IMG_1821.JPG IMG_1822.JPG I added a bridge across the wishbone clearance cutout to maintain strength.
IMG_1823.JPG Chassis Engineering mounts came on the truck, but the frame now looks too nice. I had to repaint them.
