  1. Why not Change the Tire Size to a Taller tire, that will change the Rathio
    of the Rear end.!
    That's is what I did I have a 3.73 rear & cut it Down to about 3.23

I could go lower but I think its all right & I am running 300 hp
with a Powerglide in my 50 Mercury with the Stock Rear end

    Just my 3.5 cents

@Lloyd's paint & gl*** your stock rear can withstand some abuse. As stated above the later rears backed up 409/4speeds. I have a 3.36 open pumpkin you are welcome to but shipping will probably be big money. Have you checked out the ratio in the Camino yet?

I'm dying to know but it's raining like pouring piss out of a boot here. I've already been out in it putting 2 new tires on my car trailer. But i didn't have to crawl on the ground for that lol. We'll see what the weather has in store for tomorrow ;) i don't care to steal from that car because it will be getting a full rear suspension. :D

I currently have those gears. Went from 4:56 to 3:55 thought that was great. My Son scored a free rear from a lower rider project going to a 9"??? and that rear had 3:36's. I didn't think the 1/5th of rotation between the 3:55's to 3:36's would make much difference but it did. Your gonna be super surprised and happy when your done.

Heck yeah, I'm happy as a puppy with 2 peters! The Elco is gonna be more hot rod than the wagon, so it'll probably get a 9" or 8.8". Didn't even think about using that pumpkin over in the wagon :D

My car has had a 56 chevy rear since 1960.
We had the car since 71 and although not on the road every year I just went through it 2 years ago, new bearings and center section... Old one had a bad pinion bearing.
I wasn't sure if there was more damage than that but everything else looked good.

Original was 3:70 new is 3:73

I have a 350 hp 350 and dad had a really good 327 years ago..

  15. The question becomes what kind of driving do you do? 300 horse is not real stout and around town for example a 4.1 gear is probably a good gear. The motor is probably not a high rev mill so on the highway not so much.

3.08 is a common gear for a stock low performance Chevy. They work real well on the highway as long as you are not driving the Rocky Mountains. If you have a higher performance engine that lives better at higher RPM a 3.08 gear is actually a pain in the ***.

In my mind you don't actually make one better you just make it different. If the different that you made it is what you are after then you made it better.

Lloyd, I don´t know what your driving habits are, but I went from a 3.55 to a 3.08 in my 56 Chevy ( .040 over 327, 234°/244° @050 w 112° LSA, around 11:1 cr), and wouldn´t have it any other way....the car scared quite a few Beamers on the Autobahn. It´s no dog off the line either, but of course not a drag car.
I had the same setup but with 355 cui Chevy in my 34 Plymouth, 3.08 gears with rather high rear tires ( L78-15 Cokers), it was fun too! Of course no wheel stander but good for mid 12s ET on the 1/4 and a great cruiser. Both engines kick in at about 3500 rpm.

This is why hoarding is a good thing . :D

  19. I'm with you.... If I can't hammer on the car at least once in a while, what's the point of owning it? While I don't abuse my cars with the same abandon I did when younger, not sampling the 'hot' once in a while makes you a poser IMO... Although I would upgrade if I broke the same part enough times... LOL.

There's stupid, there's fun, and there's stupid fun. The last one can create great stories and sometimes legends...

I've owned my '56 Nomad for 30 years this month. I have driven it over 300,000 miles. The first 9 1/2 years with the 265 and three-on-the-tree, the last 20 1/2 years with a mild 350 and Muncie M20. I have the original rear end with 3.70 gears. I drive it like any other car most of the time but also like to get on it from time to time. It will get rubber in all four gears easy. I haven't broken the rear end yet, with emphasis on the "yet."
I have a 3.55 third member if I want to install it but I'd really like a 3.36 or 3.08 just because the 3.70 gets tiresome on the highways and interstates where I do quite a bit of my driving.

I've had a bunch of cars with a 3:73, kinda got used to them. But when i hit the interstate in my wagon, with gps for a speedometer, it was screaming at 64mph lol, no tach, but it was screaming. I just ran it at 60, it was still in the shakedown stage. I'm excited to put the 3:36 in it. Just gotta get the time.

My '56 210 has the stock rear end in it with a 355" sbc, mild cam and a TH350. I swapped out the 3.08s for some 3.55s that I bought off of CL and I really like it. Most of our roads around here are 55 mph  but it sounds sweet at 70-75. The best thing is the acceleration difference, it's a lot snappier and barks the tires real nice. Those 3.36s should work out pretty good for you.

being a weird hamb guy I sold my Nova 10 bolt axle, ditched the turbo-whatchamawhatzit 3spd. and stuck a '57 pg and stock '57 pg rear back in mine.......just sayin':D
but if I had my wishes I would be using that 3rd pedal...4 spd and a '50's Olds or Pontiac rear with 3.90s making it fun on both ends

Hey *****y Bob ;) i swear i thought that was your name until we talked on another issue, kinda like wondering why Andy won't take a bath, but then i figured out it was uncleandy, not uncleanandy  lmao!! One thing I've learned is what i used to think was hp is no longer true! Mild must mean 600hp now? Most of my life was spent power braking 185hp on a hill, in the rain, to lay down that 4' strip of rubber, and drive back 20 times to look at it and show my buddies! If i had 250hp i was a ***** and the fastest guy in 3 counties in my head :D now I'd be comfortable saying i have 325? It pulls hard, but it's a station wagon, it's a big ol car. From the replies I've read here, I'm good with leaving the stock axle in there, I'll switch to the 3:36 and put new axle bearings in it, then hammer down!!!! Hey my header making brother, try to have a great day out there and not be *****y:p:D;)

Have run stock rear ends in a few trifives. Had a 56 (12.20 in the 1/4) stout 400 turbo 350 4:11 posi. sticky tires. traction bars etc-ran it maybe 30 p***es and alot on the street-no breakage. Wife's 55 has a snotty 327 but was a built pg with a 3:36 posi. Drove it for many years and she ran it at the drags for years as well, would drive it to Fremont (100 miles) run it and drive home-young and no fear back then. They would finally get noisy and throw in another one-they were everywhere for maybe $25.. Finally put in a 69 Camaro 12 bolt posi with an OD trans. Friend just drug home an other 69 12 bolt posi-think I'm gonna snag it too.
