I saw something the other day that said the 8.8 was similar enough to a Chevy 12 bolt that they think Ford copied the design and then put larger axles in it.........

No room for a C clip axle in my hot rod. Have you looked at the 8.75 mopar.
Never mind, your not building a hot rod.

Yeah it's a family car. No hot rods around my place. Just about every "hot rod" I've ever owned has had a C clip rear end in it o_O never had a problem. To each their own huh? I'm the exception to the rule on a lot of things :D

Damn! How's she do on those interstate trips? Mine does great on US 60, it's the interstate that ****s lol. I don't wanna get p***ed by tractor trailers because my gear ****s!

  8. My vote is always for a rear with a drop out 3rd member.

You can change gears by swaping 3rd members. You have to set up a gear set on the late rear.

Plus the axle is a ware surface on the late 10 bolt G.M. rear.

Broke my spiders on my 56 wagon... 3.55 gear, had wife me when it popped gouging on it, ..coasted a few blocks. Show'd her the hot rod walk back to shop and get trailer. Explained to her the story on cheap parts... she said you need to buy better racing parts .. ;-) score...

  13. The old 57 vette had a stroker motor with a little B&M blower with a 4 speed. It never broke the posi rear end. I had a 55 chevy convertible with a 348 and a 5 speed with an open 308 rear, i blew that one apart on a 1-2 shift on the way to work. My current 56 has a 9” furd. The 57 rear you have will most likely be fine.

Spider gears are the deal that will break in the old rears. They crystallize and fall in half into the cage. Age of the spider gears are the big enemy. Lippy
