While working on the engine yesterday I looked closer at the spark plugs. Their gaps were way off (.010 vs .035). I also took note of their condition relative to each cylinder. I think they actually look pretty good and didn’t notice any significant differences between the cylinders. Let me know what you think.

From what I can tell they really didn’t ‘do’ stickers back in the late 40’s. Too bad I love me some stickers.

Working on tail light and license plate placement. I think I’m going to start with placing the original tail lights under the back flush with the rear. I’ll make brackets to utilize the bumper brace holes mounting holes. That will have them a few inches from each outside edge. I think this will look pretty good. I plan to create a bracket centering the license plate on the rear utilizing the spare tire mount holes. Need suggestions on an appropriate license plate light.

I know this is not right but along the lines of what I’m thinking. Recommendations?

  9. cut the plastic off and stick some chunks of 2x4 to hold the beads apart for at least a day to aid in mounting them.

Good advice tb33anda3rd - I have already finished one and it was a real pain because it was squashed from shipping. I’m gonna do the 2x4 thing and bring them in where it is warm for the night.

  13. My trick on the Tires is to install the New Tubes and just add enough air to spread the beads about 6". After they sit a day or two they pretty much stay apart.

Pist-n-Broke - Nope the old return tube was “missing”. Cleaned out the oil pan. Nothing. And yes, it was a pain. I tried to clean it, dress it, and tap it. No go. I did the best I could. Made it fit and welded it.

I didn’t go any further. I didn’t remove the rear crank cap. I imagine I will be back in there at some point.

  18. That tube seems to be an on going issue. I've always thought it was due to the Vibration you mentioned early on. When you get tired of it start looking for a B crankshaft. They seem to clear that all up.

  19. monkey,
You just turned your car into a "HOT ROD"
Nothing is a bigger influence than Biggs and Littles!
    Great job!

  20. Here is a Model A crank as you seen in your Motor.
No bob weights to stop the vib's. Now the 32/3/4 B crank.
Serious difference and far less vib's. The other thing to do is stay out of upper end R.P.M's.

I can’t see the pics you posted but I get what you’re saying. Kinda makes me think I should to start building up another banger on the side that has better, crank, cam, head, intake, carb, header....

  22. That's strange, the photo showed when I hit post. Who knows. The balanced cranks are so sought after you can actually buy a Brand New B style one from Mac's. They are "only" $1,613.99 that's plus freight of course. I don't think I can get behind that deal myself. I bought a nice one for my Banger for $125.oo some 10 years ago.

Yeah. I can’t spend that much for a crank. I would be interested in finding another banger to ‘build’.... Maybe a ‘B’. Trying to keep myself focused and not start dreaming about a v8 build yet.

Tires are all on the new wheels with shiny new center caps. I have a bit more light wiring to tidy up and then I plan to just drive it for a bit. Next will install some seat belts, start lowering it, and maybe some speed parts.... unless driving it more IMG_5120.JPG 63219373815__4DD14475-CFF5-4A29-BE60-B1EC28E5DCB2.JPG reveals some other priorities.

I need to make a plan for all of the parts (fenders, bumpers, luggage rack, running boards, and wheels) I’ve taken off. Keep for a bit or sell. If I keep I have to decide where to store all of that.

The speed with which you are getting things done is getting me excited and it's not even my car! I look every day to see what you've done. Great thread!

  27. Hang the Fenders on the wall from the bolt holes for the Running boards. I've found that's the best way to store them. That way nothing gets stacked on top of them. It also makes for a grate conversation starter. I also think every Guy with a Hot Rod should have a tire rack somewhere. They just take up to much floor space.
