Mummert's Ram Horn's are $345. Any new headers for your application will cost that much, or more. The Ram Horns will last forever, not so for headers, and if you have the urge to wrap them, they'll have an even shorter life.

I looked on mummerts web site , well priced and they even have the dipstick to suit the ram horns

I use 57 exhaust manifolds on my 56 car. According to one of Ted dyno runs worth about 3-4 HP. The Autolite/Holley 2 barrel style manifold started in 57 and went thru 64 on the pickups. Stock on 58-60 Mercs were Holleys that flow 280 cfm. I ran 3 on my 302 GMC 6 and set many records at Bonneville.
A single 2 barrel has excellent off idle response and make torque quick on a stock engine. A nice large air cleaner covers up a lot and there are Circle Track suppliers of them since they are mandatory for stock car classes all over the country. There are great 2barrel Holleys on AMC’s and are inexpensive. I would run one without hesitation. Unless you want it you don’t need a new 350-500 Holley. good look.

Go back to the link I posted to Ted Eaton's site, and go to near the end of the posts. That chart shows all the various combos of exhaust manifolds. Given the cost, ease of maintenance and installation and looks, the rams horns are pretty decent. I'm running the FPA headers on my bird, and while better than a lot of headers, they're still more complicated than cast iron manifolds.

If the budget has them, they'd be my first choice in a truck, especially with a relatively stock engine. his mule motor is well above stock. The full exhaust system needed for the street plays into that also.

  7. You will need one to make the advance work correctly so any up to 1964 will work. There should be some available as many of those engines were installed in trucks.

It will be easier to change the disturber when the intake is removed.

You don't want to use a pre-57 distributor/w no mechanical advance with a 57-up carburetor. However, The Holley 4000 Teapot carburetor can be modified to work with a 57-up distributor.

    Yep,
    New distributor,
I got one from advance auto for a ‘63 f100. Worked great in my ‘56 292 with ‘57 intake.
If you buy a rebuilt distributor change the points and condenser before you install it .
They put garbage parts in rebuilt distributors.

I will do just that, I’m new to the y blocks all help appreciated . So any 57 and up will do the trick. What’s different to the earlier ones ?

  12. No mechanical advance in a pre '57 Y Block distributer.

Yeah the old load-a-matic vacuum only distributor isn't the best choice for performance.

Egads, what is the brand and cfm of your "puller" fan? Looks like you are using the original upper shroud. What about the lower? Having that engine to look at, I don't think many will focus on the fan. I'm thinking about using a "pusher" and a 6-blade mechanical on my 55 T-bird/w no a/c.

I went thru 3condensers before changing to a Pertronics ll. Set the timing 7 years ago and have not changed the plugs since. There are naysayers but I’ll keep it for now.

Remember that manifold was only used for the most part in 1957. Not all 57’s used the 312 4- barrel. They are getting more scarce. I like the aftermarket with the heat crossover and found one on E-bay a few years back. No manufacturer markings just the Ford “B” part number. Chose not to use it and put it back in the box..

The 312 car exhaust manifolds will not work on his 1956 pickup. The drivers side will dump right into the steering box. My Dad and I ran into this in 1965 when we put a 312 in our 56 pickup. Not wanting to run the cross over like our 292 powered 1959 pick up, we acquired another passenger side exhaust manifold and put it on the driver side, backwards, and fabricated an exhaust that curved back and ran along side the engine. Looked kinda funky, but worked great. I sure there are headers that will fit your truck being made or you could use the ram horns or truck manifolds. We were unaware of these options back in ‘65.

1957 312 were 4 barrels the only year for the big flange carb ECZ 9424 B and last year for the 312 in a ford. Mecury did use the 312 as their base engine through 60 but only as a 2 barrel. There are some truck big flange intakes ECR 9424 E but they don't flow as well. The Mummert over Blue thunder is price.

You can't hardly find a decent post '56 Y-Block distributor for love or money. There is a firm who builds them using SBF distributor housings as cores and stuffs them with new Pertronix innards but he still needs your Y-Block distributor shaft core w/gear and they get $500+ for them.

Measure the dimensions of any Y-Block distributor offered as a rebuild carefully, there are still a whole passle of them out there that were sold under part #30-2808 these do not fit right.

    Excellent score,
Now we can all debate about what carburetor you should put on top!

Had this 3 deuce setup on a 312 I built for a project. Back when I built it in the eighties most guys were throwing away the Y block and Ford flatheads in the scrape pile. Got offered what I thought was a good price at the time and sold it. Wish I had it back now. img380.jpg
