Marty, do you know anyone that might work on those Airco machines? The High Frequency solenoid on mine died and I can't seem to find out any info to determine what to get.

At work we had a couple of the old Airco's and I bought parts from Linweld and I think Airgas also had access to them.

They were built by Miller, same as Gold Star, should be some parts available.

RIGHT with you, Marty! I'm cleaning up my shop as well...my old Airco was also from '76, (that's the spirit!)
    still does fine.
So comfy, your build threads...Feels like I'm right there with you. I'm sure most of these fellas feel the same.
I'm working on my Poli-Form '27 body again, hiboy/'32 rails... a friend cautioned me about 'glassing to steel structure, he recommends a glaze of bondo on the metal, then 'glass it.
Makes sense...I recall a 'glss '34 I worked on, the fiberglass cloth was peeling off where it had been attached. Looked like it had been ground down to 'shiny', too.
    What do you say?

I quizzed Karl Wescott about bonding an aluminum riser in the trunk of my roadster and he said they use a methacrylate adhesive to bond dissimilar materials.
Look up Plexus brand, they have some specific formulations for steel/fiberglass bonding.

drifting again, but i have two old miller welders, and if you go to the miller forum there are many smart guys to help with repairs, and the main point of having an old miller is that many of the parts are generic components you buy from an electrical supply place instead of miller, or airco if thats the case. now back to Martys show

Dick from Poli-form always said to epoxy primer the steel before glassing to it.

Thanks for the info about the Miller forum. My welder was made in 53 and is no longer found in the Airco info. I'll check it out.

I may be WAAAAY out of date with this, but when I first started using fiberglass I was told that when bonding to steel to use epoxy based resin. Also, use Epoxy for building molds and then polyester to make the parts. You still need lots of wax (release agent) but you will be able to get them apart.

  14. Just noticed the touring body...that’s cool. Any more pics of it?

That was Bob and Jim Strode out of Washington State, no relation to me. They set the National Record in A/MR around 1962. Here is the car after they sold it, well built, good runner !

The hi exhaust on tub - do you get or mind exhaust swirling around cockpit? Good looking but going low for this reason. Still concerned with exhaust ending before rear tire how much fumes in cockpit

Mike, All I can say is, I built 10 including the Tub with hi pipes, that end at the rear of the bucket, and over the last 20 years haven't had a complaint about fumes. On the Tub, I turned the exhaust out. Edit, I meant 20 years instead of 2.

Dave, I am doing okay, I have been working on another project, but won't be posting pictures until it is further along, at the wishes of the owner. It's a very interesting project, and as HAMB friendly as they come ! As far as the status of #10, the ownership is in the process of changing, but the finished product will be the same, and work will resume this Spring.

I’ve had the tub for 7 years and never noticed any exhaust fumes or had any complaints from passengers. And I appreciate the construction shots.

Things are changing around here, I sold a project that I couldn't find the time or desire to finish, my 50 Olds 88 Coupe. It had been sitting in my garage, untouched for 25 years, just needed some nut and bolt work to finish. The plating and stainless polishing was all done, the interior only needed carpets. Power train was all new, 445 engine and T-400. My slow progress on # 10, convinced me to buy out Bill's interest, and I will get back on it in the near future. Friends, when you get past 70, you have to pick your project battles, by importance. But I am working on 2 very special ones for friends, and I will be posting pictures soon, you will like both of them. Olds 4.jpeg

I knew those guys from flat track racing Ducati's. They were good but not good enough to beat the team I was building engines for.......lol Really nice guys though.

I think Jack Conner did some work for them on the Modified Roadster.
