Hot Rods There are no rules in building Hot Rods

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Jan 19, 2021.

  1. Especially when it comes to how they are powered, 4 cylinders, 6 cylinders & V8's and a long list of manufactures.

What car or truck have you recently built or building and what engine is powering it? HRP

Isn't "there are no rules" a rule?

Safety first should be a rule. But when it comes to drivetrain choice I say use what is cheap, or what you have. My ‘32 Dodge PU has a 318 LA engine, I’ll keeps the hood sides closed if need be;)

  4. I have rules for hot rods...V8s for one.

I'd like to say I agree but I have to agree with 56don a bit more, a "hot rod" needs a V8.
A hot rod needs power, speed and attitude, a banger is just a neat old car (kool in it's own way).

V8 Flathead. There really wasn’t any other choice after I heard that one of a kind sound. Mine is still a work in progress. Flatheads forever!

An LA 318 is a V8:). But I also like a warmed banger or L6 too.

There are certainly some rules involved in building a traditional hot rod.:DDanny , we ´ll let this one slide as you are pretty new to this board:D

What is with this 4,6, and 8 cylinder nonsense? I'm doing a 3 cylinder.

I've had a 7 cylinder sbc and it's amazing how good it ran. :D

When I was building the Model A pickup I installed a 289 and we sit the cab back on the frame I realized cylinders 3,4,7 & 8 were sitting in the cab.

The cab is small and I am not petite, not enough room for me and half a engine so I pulled the V8 out and used a Buick V6, not very traditional. HRP

I thought about a 500 hp rule but my little 289 Ford is just a little short.

Build what you want, & call it what you want. The last build for me was a straight 6/ powerglide in a '63 Chevy wagon. Hot rod? Probably not. I'm back to work on my first car: Candy red with flames '39 Standard Tudor with a tri-carbed, bored & stroked "59" flatmotor. Hot rod? Yep. But it sure isn't fast. Waiting in the wings is a '47 Buick sedanette with a 500 Caddy, Nova clip, etc. Hot rod? I think so. But it breaks the rules for this forum. I like breaking rules, but some can't be shown here.

I have no rules, just preferences. (I was told earlier today on this site though that nothing post 48 can be considered a hot rod by definition, so many guys in here have their rules hard and fast, and that's cool for them... ).

I do prefer a flathead v8, I just love the sound of flatheads. I must admit some of the dressed up str8 6's I've seen on here really impress me tho.

HRP, I believe one of your buddies was selling a blue t with a 6 in it? I really thought that was a beautiful car, though obviously not for the purist. I'd be surprised if somebody didn't jump on that yet for what he wanted... Cool car, with many features that would have made me think I wouldn't like it if I saw them listed on paper.

Im a 3 pedals v8 man myself but those ol straight 6 front engine dragsters sure are cool! Or maybe even the sraight 6 dirt track car they used to run. Lotta good racing with those for sure! Or true D/gas class gassers! Gotta love seein a flat head or 4 banger pickin up the front wheels! So yea i say use what u got and what u can afford! Every hot rod around is cool in some way! Its what makes hot roddin so fun!
