From billing aquadrome as the roads are taller than the land it floods when wet. it is a show ground plus a camp site where some people live. This year with all the rain we have had already the camp site is totally flooded.

In So Cal, back in those early days, large sports arenas, huge auditoriums and exposition halls were the places to have car shows. Most started on Thursday morning with the car roll in and space set ups going on all day. That was the “professional” staff days for getting contacts and early photos without anyone lounging around the hot rods and customs during the weekend show, Friday to Sunday.

I had my 400mm telephoto lens with me and the arena wall handrail was a good tripod for indoor shots. But, the telephoto was not as good as a 85 mm mid range telephoto. Even with the slightest breath, a movement in the long range photo shot was detected and it came out not as clear as the shorter 85 mm or even the 135mm faster lens.

For me/us, that was the best way to see a car show that was so popular back then. Today, the photo credentials are scrutinized to no end and a certified card or letter from any magazine is the only way to get in on those Thursday morning car show spot, set up days. I had a card from several car magazines also from several motorcycle magazines that allowed me to walk in and start my casual walkabout in the huge auditoriums or sports arenas. For the modern times, a current approved photographer’s list is made from the promoters for early access or close up action during the events.

If the car show was a big one, sometimes the outer circle on the next floor level was used as a place to put a lot more hot rods customs. But, the place to be was of course, the main floor.
