Hot Rods Rumble seats are cool but worthless as tit's on a bowling ball!

I would never get one with a rumble seat.

  2. Yup restorers of any type tend to be extremists. Like those that get all het up over the 52K deuce because it has the correct rocker covers. Or use using drum brakes on a 10 second T roadster because they are just right. :D

I suppose that a rumble seat car would not be much of an issue for me. I hit every state in the union on a 7 year ride on a '49 Harley. :D

Oh on a side note ***s on a bowling ball is a better ****ogy than ***s on a boar. They proved in the '70s that ***s on a boar will predict the ***s on his offspring and more ***s is a good thing on a sow. :D

One time my ex came out of Publix and found two old ladies( probably my age now) sitting on the rumble seat reminiscing their days riding and dating in a RS. They told her "you'd be surprised what we could do in a RS!".
My ex told me that and we could only think of one thing you could do because of the room!!!

It looks like this lovely lady knows the answer! That catalog was probably a pretty racy read back in those days, too.

  5. To mostly quote my dad (I'm filling in the blank)..............
"Rumble seats are okay for who likes 'em."

    To mostly quote myself............
    "Old rumble seats never die.
They just become those backward-facing seats in the rear of '60/'70 station wagons."

All you have to do is ride in a rumble seat once to realize how much it ****s.

Not being a die hard biker, when I was in the Bay Area, thought it would be cool to ride my bike to work. I soon learned what layering up was all about. Got old real soon;). And I used to laugh at the covertibles I see driving around with the windows up.

I was going to convert the Cabriolet lid from a rumble seat to a trunk, but I am now running a rear mounted spare and a trunk lid wouldn't clear it. The '35/'36 Fords used 2 different spare mounts...The trunk models used a more "stand up straight" mount to clear the lid (which looks stupid) while the rumble seat spare mount lays it down on the body. Form is more important than function;).

The rumble lid will be a trunk that just opens the wrong way...and shouldn't be any more inconvenient than having to reach around a spare tire to access the trunk.

I told my wife I was going to justify owning my old '56 Panhead by riding it every day regardless of the weather, well I learned very quick that I didn't have the proper gear for riding in single digits and rode
5 miles from home, the tears in my eyes were frozen, I couldn't feel my hands or feet
and my knees felt like I got hit with a baseball bat, there was no such thing as a cell phones so I just stopped on the side of the road and put my hands on the front cylinder trying to regain some feeling and thinking to myself just how stupid I am.

About this time a neighbor pulled up beside me and ask if I was having trouble and I ask him if he would give me a ride back to the house and he did. on the way home he ask if he needed me to ride back and help load the bike in my truck, I told him the story of why I was riding today and he had a good laugh, I then told him that bike can sit on the side of the road until it got above freezing and I would ride it back home.

I realized I didn't have to ride every day and I had a truck with a heater, I brought the bike home later that day and I didn't ride it again until spring. HRP

A rumble seat is a trunk full of furniture.

They designed the rumble lid with Hot Rodders in mind. You can reach around and grab a cold one without stopping.;)

I converted my 29 cabriolet’s rumble seat to a trunk a few years ago. I used repro pin hinges and repro trunk sheet metal and lock mechanism. It took a lot of fitting time but was worth it. It is useful now.

I never understood rumble seats. If you needed more seating, looks like you'd buy a sedan. Never had one, never wanted one.

Yes, they look good sitting back there...but it's hard to get any "accidental ****" or look down their tops when they are that far away.:(

Hey ! the rumble seat is super cool cruising the shows, while difficult to retrieve anything on the floor forward of the seat cushion for my stiff 76 year old bones, it's still a true joy to hear & see the laughter given the grandkids during a cautious neighborhood ride.

Did the model T ever come with a rumble seat? The car in Walt Disney's "The ****gy Dog" has a rumble seat but it is the only T I've ever seen with one.

The 34 Ford 5W I had years ago had a rumble seat when I got it. I spent many hours bringing the car back to being road worthy in addition to spending money on parts, paint and upholstery. The first road trip was 130 miles to Springfield , MO for a NSRA event. Before a second trip I had changed the rumble to a trunk! Still have the original rumble seat springs if anyone might need them. 34Ford.JPG 34Ford.JPG 34Ford.JPG

Evidently, I'm not good at posting pics. Sorry

  27. By the time I was old enough to remember my scooter trash dad had a roadster . We lived in the bay area and I do not ever remember the car having the top up (if it even had a top). All 4 of us would pile in my sis in the middle and me on her lap. She loved pulling my coat down so that the cold air would go down my neck.

As for bikes, 50+ degrees is T shirt weather. LOL

Even though I posted in this thread earlier of a negative rumble seat experience, I’d still like to have one. I’ve got 4 kids and I know they’d love it, even if for just cruising around the neighborhood.

There are certain novelties about old cars that are completely impractical and have gone extinct for that reason, but it’s those things that make an old car ‘neat’.

After all, how practical does a hot rod need to be? I’ve got a boring daily driver for when I need to be practical.

  29. In a coupe or roadster the rumble seat is actually a good idea when you think about it. 3 in a hammered A coupe even if you are all pretty skinny is pretty tight.

I had a friend (guess I still do if he is still alive) that had an A coupe with a rumble seat and the roll down back gl***. He had two teen aged kids and they loved rolling with mom and dad. The roll down back gl*** made it nicer yet.

They had a Match I that they used for road tripping. LOL
