A cast housing full of gears, manually operated is different from a computer controlled something. Anyway, the place has rules, like 'em or lump 'em.
Concerned about your fuel distribution with carb on this blower that I believe was originally designed for EFI under the blower at each port. Doesn’t this blower suck in the back then screw forward & discharge at the front? Will numbers 7 & 8 get their fair share of fuel? Just questions
Well boys, learned my lesson,...gotta read the directions! I've washed my mouth out with E85 and will no longer mention Ee Ph Eye I will continue to explore and learn like a Tradition Rube but without arbitrary limits to the search to creatively build a cool car,....while carefully watching my mouth. Getting back to the project, I've determined that the snout will need to be extended 2.75". Do y'all think using the 4 Banger water pump shaft would be traditional,...enough. I'm also pretty must convinced that a single Weber DCOE "carburetor" will not work. Gotta figger how to dump enough fuel and air into the blower to run a 270 inch engine.
Thinking out loud here... Rather than depending on the oem cast 'snorkel', I'm thinking of a fabricated part that would mount the DCOE on each side about mid point of the case, maybe pointing forward at 45 deg or so to keep air flow kinda straight. A fab part might actually end up lighter than the oem part. Your belt alignment conundrum still puzzles me a wee bit. I looked back at the sheave alignment pics and cannot tell if an idler with double sheaves would even be possible given everything below, ie. t-stat manifold. Is there enough space to use such a piece? It would offer a place to adjust blower rpm ....
With your fabrication skills why could you not come off the blower where you have the two carbs pictured? Think of a Rams Horn sheet metal fabricated intake with the Webbers as originally intentioned. I can't even draw what I am envisioning but you Sir could build it. The Webbers could face either straight forward or off to either side while dropping them down to help with hood clearance.
^^^^^Right on... side draft Webers or DeLortos. Used both, very 'tunable'...and parts availability second to none. Manifolding only prob? Not for Mr. Bill... Oh, Nooooooo!!!
They used mechanical fuel injection, bit like an diesel set up. Great build I stumbled across this last night and have read it all keep up the good work.
Shit!!!! seems like it's always something. When turning the engine over awhile back there was a worrisome scrapping sound coming from the bell housing. I finally pulled the engine off the Model A engine stand to investigate and found the starter ring gear was contacting the bellhousing. About .030" nibbling with the die grinder fixated that. Then, since I had the rear of the engine available, decided to test fit the trans. Shit again!!!! Input shaft of the trans was .060" too long for the combo of flywheel, clutch, T/O bearing and bellhousing. Same issue on my other car,...but I forgot. Soooo,..made a .125" spacer so's the trans/bellhousing will seat w/o loading the input shaft bearing. Also amortized the cost a little more of the POS Harbor Freight spindle sander
Maybe move the blower forward enough to line up the belt and mount the carb/carbs/EFI behind it to fill the space and preserve a low hoodline. You might be able to tap into the rear of the blower housing where the rotors don't pass. regards, Phil
My first thought! But with careful scrutiny, (something I usually avoid) I determined that the shoulder where the spline begins was the point of interference at the T/O bearing, suggesting that the transition to the spline would need to be "turned back", therefore the spacer plate.
And re the blower chapter,....first iteration of the modifications got me about 80% of where I want to be. First, I'm not happy with the appearance of the extension and second, that piece is about 3/16" too long. The body of the blower can also be slide to the rear another 3/16" to get the belts to align on the pulleys and a more balanced appearance.
thw audi is the s5 V8 model or the Q5 model V6 with supercharged engine. The intake is on the back of the blower and would work quite well as a sidedraft
looks and cost are a big issue from when I looked at them a few years pass for a hemi build that I didn't do
I feel like I owe an update. It's been way too long. Not only has this been "giving birth to an elephant",....have also felt a bit deflated and challenged by recent hiccups in the project. Got the manifold adapter plate resolved. Knocked the corners off with a router and wire brushed it to get a "cast" appearance. Holding the adapter to the manifold after the pulleys were aligned was a challenge as there was no access to the interface for pinning or tacking, with the blower in place. Soooo,....."wicked in" SuperGlue from the outside to hold the plate and manifold together,....and then I could remove the blower to access the area to tack the two pieces together. Finally got the pulleys aligned and the appearance of the extension resolved. Taking some comfort in how the whole assembly has come together. Hooked up the starter last night to spin the engine and visualize how the serpentine belt tracked. Cool!!!!!!,....except that the freakin blower pulley wobbled -- So today I start takin things apart to find the offending component.
Everything. The blower adaptor, front extension, water crossover, serpentine belt system, all look as if the factory did it that way. You Sir have a definite eye for the aesthetics and the know how to accomplish them. Wobble in the blower pulley is just a minor hiccup that you will overcome.
That’s sharp looking. If the appearance of the extension bothers you /and it shouldn’t it looks great- add to or lengthen the rib/support fins to say a 1/4 inch of the back of the belt. Then finish wearing out your harbor freight sander and who’s gonna ever know. I personally like the way you did it but I am not usually in the majority. Cool build.
Got it! Thanks Dick. Probably not gonna happen as YouTube stresses my patience and I am adequately challenge just tryin to get the belt system resolved.
