Its been a long time since I saw one in a sprint car but to the best of my memory the engine was mounted upside down and backwards. Very fast and loud and over 400 cubic inches. Good Luck I will try to find some refrences to help you out.

Yep, I saw a Ranger-powered sprint car running at an old timers dirt track event in MN around 1990.

"The L-440 air-cooled, six-cylinder, inverted, in-line engine was manufactured by the Ranger Aircraft Engine Division of Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corp. Built in several versions ranging from 175 hp. to 200 hp., L-440 series engines were used to power the more than 6,000 Fairchild PT-19 and PT-26 trainers built during WW II."

  9. Seems to me I remember Art Arfons having a Ranger powered Green Monster(#5 maybe?)back in the late 50's.I'll have to look.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't an air-cooled engine such as this have overheating problems in a car?

With a whirring propeller or just the flight airspeed providing airflow the aircraft application will stay cool.

But what about in a car sitting in traffic or perhaps not running quite fast enough on an open highway? [IMG]

In a race car for short-duration use there wouldn't be any big problems.

    GTO, its only 200 Horse...
A Porsche fan with some ducting would cool it.

  14. Here's a Ranger-powered vintage sprint car owned by Mr. Cunningham from Des Moines. Photo was taken at Arlington, MN IMCA Oldtimer's meet.

  15. There's a guy in Carlisle PA that has (had?) one of these in a roundy-round upright midget. Maybe someone from the So What crew knows him. He lives just to the west of the fairgrounds and builds exhausts for guys restoring Offy powered Indy cars. He also has (had?) a metalflake green '35 Ford wrecker called the Happy Hooker. Very active in the Maple Grove racing museum. That's about all the hints I can remember.

In case you're wondering how I know, I broke a leaf spring on my truck at the first GoogGuys meet at Carslile (on the way the NSRA SRN at Columbus) and I broke down at the end of his street. We're sitting there scratching our heads when this guys drives up and asks us if we need any help. Real nice guy.

If anybody wants to built a Green Monster clone, or build a big front engine roadster to race Jay Leno with...
There is a rebuilt Allison on Ebay right now with no bids on it.
I'm only telling you guys this because I dont have the 15 grand to go buy it...

GTO check out the sprint car photo. This combo was use in a number of sprint cars and they ran a lot of 100 mile races. A friend told me that they never ran hot.

There's a pic of that car in one of those Hot Rod Cars style annuals that Mechanics Illustrated (or their publisher...it's the same size/format) put out in the early 50's. If I can dig it out tmrw., I'll post a picture.

  23. Dean Batchelor's book "The American Hot Rod" has some pix of it, as does the Hot Rod first 12 issues book. They aren't that great in the '12 issues book, but they do talk about it somewhere!

Hmmm....I really like the car you're talking about. But my mind is going blank right now. Did HOP UP have cutaway drawings? Because I have a cutaway of it in a magazine somewhere. Later on they added a track nose to the car and it appears in some other publications. Not full features, but pictures with captions that contain info. No mistaking the exhaust on that car.

Off the top of my head I remember the upside down and backwards bit, and the induction was multicarbed on a fabbed log manifold. Please tell us what you're planning...or aren't planning. I promise not to be a naysayer. I prefer to find reasons something CAN work.

BTW, you know that '32 body part isn't a FORD right? [IMG]

I've seen that #22 car that SJ posted run many times at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds dirt track in Davenport, Iowa, in the late 80's & early/mid 90's. Keeps up with all the other antique sprinters just fine.

BTW; if you're ever passing through Davenport, stop at the Iowa Machine Shed to eat (yeah, it's a restaurant). The food is really good, there's LOTS of it, and they have a lot of antique machinery and other mechanical "things" to look at.

Here are the pics reproduced without permission .... some of the detail is lost when uploading to StarPhoto. If you have a high speed 'net hookup I could email the originals (nice and big!) which are quite legible (~1.6Mb)
