Flip the cowl lights side for side so they droop down. I saw that on another HAMBer's car. Looked cool if you insist on keeping them.

  3. Interior isn’t so hard a job. I got a kit from Mac’s and it is fitting great. Very pleased with the quality and fit.

Thanks greasemonkdy54 - I am really having a blast. Working on it is fun but driving it around is really the best part.

alchemy - Yes, I have seen them flipped up side down. I might eventually do that.

drdave - Good to know. Did you use the Cartouche kit? Does it come with upholstery or just the backers? Sounds like something I should check out. I think it is going to be a rabbit hole for me though. I’m sure that when I peel back what I have in there now I will find more work. Rust, paint, seals....

That is good to take your 13 year old boy out for a cruise I remember doing that with my brother just a few times when I was younger the model a never ran good with the 2 four barrels so it kept my brother from driving it but I remember those rides were the best. Something happens when you are young and ride in one of these cars. I know it effected me. That feeling of a real time machine. The rumble and shake the smell. Burning paint on the headers and gas and exhaust smell in the air. hanging your arm out the window. Feeling the wind roll through the cab fuzzy dice blowing in the wind. It paints a picture for a kid that is unforgettable.

  10. I always laugh at the misconception that mechanical brakes can't possible work and it takes balls to use them. cut a couple "lines" on a mechanical brake and you still could stop. try that with hydraulics.

Started to remove the windshield to install some new weather stripping knowing that it was gonna be a rabbit hole. First off the bolts holding the windshield frame hinge at the top just spun and wouldn’t come out. So I had my boys help me. That led to one of them breaking off my passenger side cowl light. IMG_5460.JPG

Then I had to start taking out the (crappy) interior panels (read headliner) to get to the backs of the bolts that were spinning.
    IMG_5454.JPG

That led to the discovery that above my windshield/headliner it was stuffed with ‘stockings’ and towels.

Some days I should just stay in the house and read a book. Ha!

My wife went immediately to the possibility that ‘Pappy’s’ previous owner was a serial killer and he collected the stockings from his victims. “The Stocking Murders” she can be a bit creative.

  14. More likely, the sox etc prevented the top material from flapping in the breeze
and the key was a spare, try it in the pop out ignition switch!
Or maybe the former owner had something on the side!

What is the best way to remove all of this petrified rubber?

Seems like a torch might do it but I’m afraid it might crack the windshield. IMG_5492.JPG

  19. I would take a putty knife and gently tap it to try and remove that spent rubber. Like you mentioned, I would be reluctant to use a torch. What would soften that rubber and help it to release? That's another question.

Thanks Don. Not sure if you can tell but I lack patience sometimes. Gently with a putty knife will take a lot of self control. I’ll try. [emoji2]

  21. I might try a blow drier or heat gun to try and soften the old rubber, but be careful not to get too close to that glass or "another rabbit hole"!

We used to make a tire prep when we raced gokarts that was equal parts acetone, mineral spirits and ATF, it will soften up rubber then use either a razor scraper or sharpen a putty knife so that it will cut the rubber, if that doesn't get it soft enough you could try a hair dryer after the fumes from the prep have dissapated!

That's too bad. I was hoping it was one of Jason Bourne's keys to a locker that had money and guns and passports in it.

Brake fluid will soften rubber. It also will dissolve paint, so don't get it anywhere you don't want paint ruined.

I've never heard of or used the concoction that Mr. Stevens mentioned. It sounds like it would be pretty effective, though.

b-t-w; after you've got all of it off that you can by scraping I bet a wire wheel on a 4" angle grinder will clean the metal up to bright and shiny. I'm assuming that after scraping you'll still have dried glue and rubber particles that haven't yet come off.

If the sox don't fit you must acquit...

Now I’m wondering if I should replace with safety glass while I have it out

  28. Yes, I got the Cartouche kit. Came with everything....seat covers, padding, upholstered door panels, headliner, wind lace and all the other misc covered panels. The parts I have done have fit great. Like you, it’s easy for me to run down the rabbit hole, so there are parts of the interior I won’t be doing for a while because one part “begats” the next and then I’m into rebuilding windows and window tracks, which get to paint while it’s apart, which gets to top insert which gets into.... lol

On the broken cowl light, I just took the cowl lights off of my Model A and I used snap-in hole plugs; aka chassis plugs or Butch plugs available in those convenient little hardware drawers at Ace Hardware. I painted them with a Rustoleum red and popped them in, almost a perfect match with the paint and it looks so much more hot roddy.
