Projects My 55 Ford Mainline Police Car...(revised)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Blacktop-Ranger, Mar 1, 2021.

  1. I have this 1955 Ford Mainline Police car from Spokane Washington. EDITED: Verified authenticity with local museum in Spokane, not planning on selling just was curious about value.... I appreciate the information you all gave me, I didn't realize its uncouth to ask valuation early on. I apologize for that. I am changing the direction of this thread to part finding. who would y'all recommend for window glass, and for door striker mechanisms. These are the last mechanical flaws I need to repair. I just finished rebuilding the generator when it died on me going through Libby Montana, had to follow my GF for 250 miles in the dark with my headlights off to keep the battery charged as long as possible. Only had to jump and charge 5 times lol.

I love these new 'guys' that join just find a 'value' or fish for buyer:
    Value - s $2.00-$100,000.00 and in-between
figure what you want and advertise it, if it doesn't sell, lower the price

Hey, Dalton! I took a look at your website and it covers a lot of happenings. Most are off topic for this forum but there are some things that would work here. What @typo41 said is probably going to be the way to go. Personally, I wouldn't have much use for a base model 4 door sedan so to me, it wouldn't be worth very much. Good luck!

Question is, Is it a real cop car or did someone just through a bubble gum light on top of a 4 door and call it a cop car? Don't see any radio equipment in the photos. If it is a documented cop car my guess is the value would be more than just 4 door. How much more is like @typo41 said.

I'm guessing it wasn't a cop car. Back then they usually had spotlights on most of the cop cars and I don't see any on this one. As for the interceptor thing someone probably changed the valve covers. Probably just a normal 292.

Post up the vin#. Should be able to tell from that whether it was a cop car.

292’s were rare in 55 for the standard buyer where the 272 was way more prevalent. Police cars were ordered with the optional 292 but probably more were I6’s for cities. Those in the know could order the 292. Police cars also had a much larger generator which is a dead giveaway....

Ask 500 guys and get 500 different answers........I’m guessing you are a man full grown, so be a man and pick a price.
You ought to know how it works by now, ask for more than you expect.....wiggle room as a rule.

    Wrong guy, close though

  12. Uh, yea. By the looks of the pictures it is a clone. It should have had a vinyl front seat and as has been mentioned at least one spotlight if not two. No radio equipment or any sign of one and lack of a high output generator. I'll go $1500 if you deliver it.

  13. Up here , that car with out the “police heritage “ would fetch 5-12 grand depending on location and how desperate you are to sell and who’s looking at that particular time.

as far as the cop car story, I wouldn’t care and I wouldn’t pay anymore for the car just cause it was a fuzz mobile.

    Anyways neat car.
You might be a nice guy, but I don’t like guys who use and abuse the hamb.

  21. Neither do I and that is why my offer is for a fixer upper. By the way I say "fixer Upper" because to remove the dummy roof light and weld the holes shut and repaint the entire car it will cost$. here is what an authentic 1955 Washington Police car looks like.

This one looks nothing like your clone.

  22. I am somewhat of a skeptic, there are signs to say it's not a police but one thing I noticed and enlarged is the optional police speedometer the registers 120, the normal speedometer is 110. HRP

Police package, cool story but adds no value. Automotive Appraiser for 20+ yrs.

A police car would also have a am radio delete plate. The old police car I used to have also had a "certified calibration" printed inside the speedometer.

I guess I’ll contribute, the thread has garnered more interest than a classified ad would;). Issue for the OP is he doesn’t have enough post to even respond to a PM.

  27. Standard '55 speedometer goes to 120. I have a '55 (not a cop car) that my parents bought new. Every '55 Ford I ever saw had a 120 MPH speedometer. A cop car may have had the Thunderbird speedometer that went to either 140 or 150, don't remember which.

I was told by a Wa state patrolman back in the early 60's that all their cars had certified speedos. Likely the same for most of the local police.

IIRC, the "police" versions used the Dana 44 axle, like the birds and wagons. I'm not sure it was the same version as the trucks, I know the trucks used bigger axles than the bird. There were also differences in the width of the rear brake shoes used in those applications. But anything could have changed over the years, they were all pretty much bolt in interchanges.

  29. He can respond if a member PM's him first. Until he has 10 posts he cannot initiate a PM with any member. If I am not mistaken because I have initiated a discussion with a new member with less than 10 posts. If you refer to my post above of an actual Washington Police car it is not the same color combination. It is not period correct for Idaho or Oregon either looking at their service combinations for the States that border Washington.

Man, that kind of price range makes me wonder what a car like mine would be worth up there and if I should consider selling it. Surely mine is worth more than a 4-door Mainline.
