I have a stock 38 Ford front axle and wishbone with a reversed eye spring. The wishbone hits the trans pan so I will be splitting the wishbone. I have the plate that mounts to the stock trans mount with tie rods and weld in bungs. The kit came without instructions so I'm wondering what the best approach is. Any tips from how you guys did it!
Measure twice cut once. After splitting the bones you will have to realign the front perches to be square with the spring. I would install the plate and go from there. This a fair amount of work, if your not confident there's nothing wrong with farming this job out to a reputable fabricator. If you have a problem I have several pairs of really nice bones in my stash.
Like Krylon 32 stated once the bones split the spring hangers will need to heated with a torch, and bent to line them up for the spring.
Can I cut the end of the bones off, just the end, while the spring is still attached or do I need to remove the shackles and keep things in line perch and spring wise to get my measurements?
Just a thought but if you used the forged ball end of a model A or 32-34 wishbone that would spread the legs of the wishbone wider maybe giving you the needed clearance. Not sure how much room you need. Ive swapped wishbone centers before it might be less work for you and keep the suspension a little closer to stock geometry. Good luck either way.
With the spring installed the wishbone wont move far when cut.Take your measurements before you start.Loosen the nut on the pin that holds the axle/ wishbone together before you start.
Just a word of caution...if you got your thread in bungs from Speedway, make sure you check how well/tight the rod ends thread in. The ones I purchased for my '38 build were ridiculously loose/sloppy. I ended up redrilling and tapping them one size larger and changed the rod ends to one size larger to get a good fit. Good luck with your project.
