As much as lacquer thinner is not the best to wash your hands in, if you get gear oil or diesel on your hands and hate the smell, wipe your hands with lacquer thinner to get the smell out. Then wash hands with soap and water to get rid of the thinner. (tradesman spraypainter/ panelbeater).

I did a lot of welding, rubber gloves are not very compatible with welding, leather gloves work much better.

I do use rubber gloves when dealing with chemicals and paint a lot more often these days then I used to. Using all this personal protection stuff takes some getting used to for this old guy. Some of it isn't so bad, but some of it just drives me nuts though.

Man, those hands are speaking to you, and you aren't listening. Use some ppe, give your skin time to recover, I lost a friend in the transmission business to liver cancer his doc thought was directly relatable.

Hate the gloves, but do try to wear the latex? gloves with all strong liquid chemical or paint use. Didn't always, but the gloves are cheap and found all over these days..

Iffy on dirty, greasy stuff, but generally don't care for the feel of that either. More annoying than the brake cleaners, starting fluid, or paint thinners. Wear brown jerseys and toss them when getting saturated.

My son is 40 and never wears gloves and has cracked skin on most fingers and almost lost a finger recently. Got infection somehow and wnole hand is somewhat numb. He never wears gloves and works on his Impala a lot. My fingers look in better shape than his.

Not really sure that is what it is from, but doctors don't know either. For welding I usually wear the leather long gloves, but not always. Sometimes one leather closest to torch end and the other with just a brown jersey glove for a tad of protection at least.

Been welding off and on for 50 years and the early modest skin burns convinced me it was a bad idea to have naked hands. See guys doing it on YouTube, but most I will do is a tack weld without something on my hands. I really don't like pain all that much...

Thinking back the only time I wore gloves while working in a shop was during the time that I worked in a Midas Muffler shop., I was hired as a front end and brake mechanic but they did very little front end and brake work. They had a bulk supply of jersey gloves and we were required to wear them .

16 years of working as a TSA screener rather got me comfortable with wearing nitril gloves. I buy a box and wear them a lot more often than I used to. I pick up a few pair of Jersey gloves at Dollar tree for when I am welding or cutting. Then try to remember to wear them .

I do, I´m an hair stylist, barber, whatever they call it, I work on peoples hair and in their faces and it´s easier for me to get all the grime and grease out from under my fingernails on off my skin after I had been wearing gloves than just my bare hands...in case I can´t get my hands all clean I just say that´s hair tint residue.

I agree....I mean, vaccines are just weakened little viruses and other little medical varmints. My daughter is a PA and I keep telling her that one day the AMA will approve lacquer thinner to pour on open wounds because it amazes me how quick cuts heal when I accidentally pour lacquer thinner on em. And that soothing burning sensation which follows takes your mind off any other little things which mite be bothering ya!

Remember spreading chlordane around foundations, doing brakes and blowing off the dust with the air hose, using brake cleaner to wash the grease off my hands and a lot of other really stupid things. I am still not as good about wearing gloves as I should be, but at least I try to be better. My old boss died of stomach cancer, mechanic all his life,
not a pretty way to go.

And now we have “Hand Sanitizer “ scattered all over the world, everywhere you go. They had to recall that crap because of the chemicals in it. WTF. I wash my hands with DAWN 10 times a day. If it gets oil off a ducks ass—good enough for me.

o_O Jersey gloves are not for welding. Period
Do yourselves a favor and get a pair of proper good quality gauntlet welding gloves and use them.

  14. After decades of being the tough guy , I did realize that I need to protect myself from chemicals and grease. I started wearing the black nitrile gloves in my shop and do see a improvement in my hands . I wear them all the time now while in my shop. I can tell that my thought process and memory has diminished a little over the past 15 years . Just need to take care of myself so I can enjoy the years I have left working on my projects.

Leather and only when welding. However, a good tight pair really help sooth the arthritis pain when doing something other than working in the shop but never rubber.

I'm pretty bad about wearing gloves while working. I just dont like them. Everytime I use gloves I feel like my dexterity is diminished. I have clean hands but they wind up cut, scraped, or smashed. I will say there are certain tasks that require gloves, and for those tasks I wear glove weather I like them or not.
I need to work on being more comfortable wearing them. They are cheap insurance.

I wear the nitrile gloves when I'm shooting paint (also wear a respirator). Mostly for when I clean out the gun and cup with lacquer thinner.
I know a guy who owned/worked in body shops most of his life, he now has sensitive skin, he breaks out with painful rashes when around even mild chemicals.

I like many of you don’t wear mechanic gloves when working on projects. Seems I don’t have the feel of bare fingers when assembling things or using tools. Probably have three or four pairs laying around the shop that the wife or kids have bought me over the years. Probably a lot of the scars I have could have been avoided if wearing gloves. Also would never wear gloves while working with machines I’m sure the result from advice from old journeyman while working in the skilled trades. I do wear latex/nitrile gloves when cleaning parts or for nasty jobs but only after a case of dermatitis and developing a sensitivity to chemicals.

  20. Different gloves for different uses

The vinyl clear- some oil dirty work and very light "spraying stuff I dont want to get on my hands", or gasoline.
Heavier dirty work latex coated grabby gloves, usually white cloth or the red Milwaukee ones with black coating.
Welding leather or any heavier grinding, cutting Leather gloves- I rather cut up a glove that have a cut.

Just a note, your hands are priceless, metal parts and chemicals can be bought. Your hands soak all the chemicals in and then you know..
My dad wore latex gloves in the 80's before most all mechanic wore them as common practice. He never heard the end of it from the the dum-dums. Now its a regular thing, why would a shop require you to wear gloves on the clock? Just a layer or protection and cleanliness.

As a Lineman for many years had to wear rubber gloves and sleeves for extended periods doing energized work. Hands looked like prunes after many hrs. Got used to wearing leather gloves daily as well when climbing etc. Do my best to wear some type of gloves now when working on cars, etc. Sometimes I forget and end up with cuts etc. Always when using chemical products. Have boxes of disposable gloves in several locations around the garage as well as some lineman gloves.

I never think of putting gloves on until I am covered in grease. I always use them when dealing with paint.

16 years ago , got new neighbors. Then they had a kid. After 3 or 4 years go by, we forgot they even had a kid. They never had him outside. More time goes by and now the kid has skin allergies. The sun makes his skin breakout. He has to cover his arms and have a towel around his neck. He is 16 now and can be in the sun for longer periods now. The Doctor told his parents that he grew up in a to sterile of an enviorment. The method can go both ways. A little(I said a little) bit of dirt and grease every now and again can do you some good.

I love the snap of a latex glove on my wrist when putting them on. Makes my sphincter tighten everytime.
Grease and grime under the nails and embedded in your skin isn't attractive in my line of work so I wear them to keep my hands tidy for the most part. A lot of other benefits here as well. Especially seam sealer, you got 10 gloved fingers to do the spreading with, then chuck em in the trash.

I wear gloves, but not to protect my skin. I like being able to peel one off quick and touch something without getting it all dirty. If it protects my hands, I guess I've been getting a side benefit.

My friend and driver of my modifieds, Jim, was burned over most of his body his 1st year of racing in 1962. Like you he had very delicate skin where the skin grafts had been done, and really weird skin where they didn't do grafts, just peel and heal, as he called it. He was a fabricator and never worked without gloves and long sleeves and all the other PPE he could get over the years. Me, I didn't wear gloves much, except for welding, until roughly 25-28 years ago, when working at the EPA NVFEL doing alcohol fuels emissions research. I had raced snowmobiles in the late 60s early 70s using methanol, and the modifieds in the 70s and never wore gloves handling the stuff, so hey I knew better right?

Bottom line while working on fuels research projects, I developed a sensitivity to alcohols, triggering migraines within minutes of exposure. Yes I was awash in methanol almost daily, and now when I would like to play with an injected 327 on methanol, I am hesitant. Many chemicals have alcohols in them, hand sanitizer for instance. The past year has been a bitch.

Oh and the sanitizers contaminated with methanol, since it is less than 1 to 2 percent, don't worry about that, unless you are drinking it.

So these days, unless its just to measure and draw parts up, I wear gloves. 9 mil HF nitrile gloves for chemical exposure, mechanics gloves for handling older greasy parts during dissassembly, tig gloves for well, tig welding, and when they start to get dirty for wrenching (I get gloves 1 size smaller than my hands so i get good tactile feel once they stretch to fit a little bit).
