What is this black mess along the top of the dome and faceplate? Some kind of caulking/sealant? After cleaning, what do y'all use as a replacement?

That black stuff is like a closed cell foam weatherstrip material. You can find something similar at the hardware store for putting around doors and windows. It does not need to be black.

Cant remember what i used to clean that gunk. Maybe alcohol.. But, I put mine back together without a foam sealer. I didnt want to stress that old plastic. I figure the dust will eventually get into the speedo, but its not a daily driver, so should be a while before it gets dirty. Make sure you dont tighten the two small screws at the bottom corners tightly. I made that mistake and cracked a nice faceplate. Cost me a bunch to find another one Speedometer (1).JPG

That's kinda what I thought. I scraped it off with a razor blade. I'll go find some thin self stick weather stripping at HD.

Too late! I tightened them too tight and got a small crack down by the 110 logo. It's small and not too noticeable. I'll just go with it. Lesson learned!

Why not just use black RTV ? It can take the heat.
