A 39 trans will bolt up to the stock rearend just fine by switching the outer clamshell to the 4 bolt kind. I can't say as to the Mitchell's strength behind a V8, but I know they make them for the early V8 cars too. Maybe it's the same unit?

So, yes the overdrive will be useful later with a trans swap.

alchemy - Thanks for the quick response. This sounds like it might be a good direction. More research required. I plan to call Mitchell Manufacturing.

Decided to get some cushion between me and my seat springs.
    Another rabbit hole.
The seat assembly was pretty difficult to remove. A couple of the screws were rusted and wouldn’t budge. Ended up breaking them off.
    IMG_5711.JPG IMG_5712.JPG
Once the seat assembly was out I decided to wire wheel some surface rust off the interior. Mainly the floor and sides behind the seat into the rumble seat area. That led to another rattle can paint job. IMG_5723.JPG IMG_5720.JPG

Then on to disassembly of the seat.
    IMG_5726.JPG IMG_5727.JPG IMG_5731.JPG
Crazy how my seat back was connected to so many things. Material from the seat back top to the parcel shelf. Material on the back was also the interior of the ruble seat including floor. Not to mention my seatbelt mod was threaded up through everything.

I couldn’t resist pulling some of the newspaper scraps out of the mouse nest. Plan to just check them out to see if I can find any interesting information or dates. IMG_5745.JPG

Anyone know about the cross stickers on the windshield in these pics? Just curious.

  10. Think it was some sort of safety sticker, maybe similar to today's NSRA Safety 23.

Next significant effort will be installing the drop axle. I am still gathering a few parts. I want to be strategic about the timing. I’m enjoying driving the car and don’t want to take it off the road until I can complete the install without too much delay.

I’ve gotten better at double clutching but I’m starting to realize that I’m not going to be satisfied with only cruising at 40mph. I’m going to have to upgrade to some overdrive gears soon. Either a different trans or a Mitchell overdrive. I need to do more research to determine the most efficient/effective way forward.

Tony - What huge complement! I haven’t thought about selling it until your post. I have enjoyed the project so much and learned so much I think I would consider selling it and doing another one.

Speaking of selling stuff. I’m gonna put an ad in the H.A.M.B. parts for sale section and a few other places soon.

  23. Check with your peeps at Bratton's. They may know someone who needs the exact parts that you have to sell. Could save the hassle and cost of shipping.:)

If I were you I would keep the original fenders, running boards and aprons. Even if you don't need them now they are nice and very expensive to replace, especially if you want real Ford metal. They are also a good selling point if you should decide to sell. That's what they put rafters in garages for.

  25. Hey Tribal,
You might want to list your parts on the Ford Barn.
There are another bunch of great guys on there. I'm one!
They tolerate Hot Rodders, and bend a little if the car is "Early"style, and "all Ford"
They are very happy for any Ford that remains Ford.
But they are more than happy to buy Ford Hot Rod "take offs"
of real Henry steel. "original" is what they like!
When I was into the parts big, I sold lots of parts there!
    You will have to join.
Ryan is Boss "Administrator"over there too last I looked!
    Good luck with the sale.
I'll keep an eye out to help if I can!
The wheels and tires will sell easily, and
The fenders also may be keepers, as said above
Very hard to find a matched set as pretty as those!
You might want to keep the frame covers also.
Many Old School Hot Rods ran them to cover the frame , without fenders.
    It changes the look.
    Many say for the better.
    Good luck!

Don - Thanks for the bump. I haven’t been doing much work on Pappy lately. Doing lots of family activities over the boys’ spring break. I’m still waiting on some parts from Okie Joe to do the drop axle. Sounds like the balls to connect my 32 spindles to my tie rod and drag link are on back order. However, I have been driving more. Took my wife out on a dinner date the other night. Other than that I’ve been tracking down and fixing some rattles and researching new drivetrain options so I can cruise over 40 mph without so much engine/high RPM vibration. TM
