Nope. Not sure at all... Dude could totally be trying to scam me. IP address is from Indianapolis, IN... But, who knows? PayPal scams are rare and really hard to pull off though... Regardless though, I still want to know the history - if any.
here is a pic of the engine with the ports on the same side of the head, from what I found all his pont engines used valve covers with breathers on them...
Here's another: Those valve covers are definitely different from what I have... They are just trying to distract us from the murder of Patsy Cline. Bastards.
Yeah, that's probably the best approach. Let him know you are more interested in where they are going, than the money. If he opens up with viable info...possible deal, if not...screw him.
Wow, interesting. Scammers I've encountered are pretty unsophisticated, and wouldn't dig up an old JJ post just to ping you about it. I'm betting he's legit, but yes, shifty.
Yep. Which is strange cuz Mickey was a Pontiac guy for most of the 70's. I don't have the magazine. I found the cover online... December, 1970.
I did a shallow dive search and came up with a RPM performance parts store in Indianapolis. Maybe it’s him.
I'll trade you 2 pints of NH maple syrup for them. Or better yet, send your potential buyer a message back "surely someone who would pay $1500 for a set of valve covers would pay $3000 for said valve covers."
I'm starting to think the whole Patsy Cline thing was just posted up as a joke. Everyone knows she was killed by a pair of straight pattern Edelbrocks.
Is this the mystery shopper by chance? https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/paying-4-figures-for-rare-sbc-valve-covers.1201970/
the Wash .state guy contacted me about selling my early Weiand sbc valve covers on my 36 coupe( saw them on a thread here ).. Wanted them for a dragster ( which is now for sale here) then I found his want add for rare sbc v/c's..
So last time I featured these valve covers, I did two things: 1. Contacted Edelbrock to see if they "RPM heads" ever came with valve covers similar to mine. They said no... They came with Edelbrock valve covers under certain packages... 2. Contact RPM Performance. If I remember right, they were in Ohio? And they told me they had never sold valve covers... Is their an RPM Head that I'm missing perhaps?
Did Mickey Thompson have his own on site foundry? If so it may not have taken too much to change an insert for the name to make some custom one off pcs.....
I might try emailing the guy a link to this thread. If he's smart he'll give up the info on why he wants them so bad. If the story is good enough Ryan might just give them to him.
I have a little problem with the Mickey Thompson theory. I'm under the impression these are staggered bolt covers for pre 1960 heads? If so, I doubt Mickey T was using anything from that era on his 1963 to 1970 Indy projects. Other thoughts?
