Hot Rods MODEL A GUY'S - A GAS TANK QUESTION

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, May 13, 2021.

  1. When I built my Model A pickup back in the day I fabricated a gas tank to fit in the bed that looked similar to a metal box and the fact that the original tank had been cut out before I found the cab.

What are you using for a gas tank? got a photo please share it with guys that may be building now. HRP

My avatar 28 ran a V8 60 and the stock tank, nothing wrong with them except limits what gauges you can run in the dash. My 30 Sport Coupe has a Tanks 15 gallon tank in the trunk, I have a good 30 tank but didn't want to use it on this build. IMG_0446.jpg

In my A PU I have a tank inside the frame fitted between the left frame rail and the driveshaft, I built a template and had it made. About 12 gallons.

I've seen lots of variations on the theme.
Home built, purchased, '32 tank on the rear and Model T tanks in the trunk area.
I have a '32 at the rear on my '28 Tudor and stock tank on my '29 coupe.

I was actually going to ask this very question since I just bought a 29 pickup. It has a good stock tank. Thanks!

Home built combination gas tank and battery box. Biggest I could get in and out was 11 gal. Looking a little dusty back there!

I’m using an 18 gallon U2 tank from tanks inc. as well.

  10. I ran a stock tank in my Model A Tudor back in the 70’s. It was a solid rust free car. Never had any issues, but I must admit that I thought about 10 gallons of gas sitting nearly in my lap, more than once.

  11. I bought a '69 mustang stainless steel 19-gallon tank for my '29 AA, and will mount it below the bed and just behind the rear axle. I will fabricate an express bed with nozzle access through the floor. Like many others, I didn't feel comfortable having 10 gallons in my lap, and also wanted a minimal gauge arrangement in the dash. I'll put a tach and two other gauges overhead in a separate panel.

  13. I drove my A Vicky for almost 30 years (140k+), with the stock tank and gauge. Never a problem.
And at least as safe as the stock tank hanging out the back on my Deuce.

I didn't want to put the tank in the bed of my truck, because I actually use the bed to haul stuff once in awhile. I mounted it instead behind the rear crossmember, and put an access hatch in the bed floor.

When I was putting my first hot rod together in 1959,the 28A roadster tank already had a rust hole in lowest part of bottom. I was wanting to add over head swing pedals at the time! So cut the bottom out that dose not show from siting in a 28"A" anyway. Later made pedals out of the floor, but didn't know I'd change my mind than.
So first gas tank, was what I had around, only held about 5 gal.,it was for a outboradmotor boat.
After nearly a year,I found something a lot better then the ugly boat tank.
There's a long story about that. But the short of it is,I got a beer keg/15.5 gal.,that both looked cool to me an held more gas. So I replaced the boat tank{like pic.} with what I thought was way better. Still drive with the same keg!

My 29 has a homemade 14 gallon tank mounted in rear.
Came with the car and was just a square box when I got it. It just didn't look right square and all when the cars lines are rounded.
After considering a aftermarket 32 tank, I bent up some 20 gauge sheetmetal to cover the tank and make it appear more 32ish.
To make it seem a part of the car, I brush painted it with Rustoleum as the rest of the car was brushed years ago.
It looks a lot better and I'm satisfied. 20210513_214422.jpeg

  19. Custom made 17 gallon tank. Good enough for my first RPU, good enough for this one.

I don’t have a Model A, but remember reading an article in the early 1980’s about how to install twin saddle tanks inside the chassis rails.
Biggest issue was routing the exhaust pipes away from them for heat reasons. Although I am sure with today’s technology there would be better materials for heat shields available now.

  25. Dean, that's basically how I mounted the tank in my Model A pickup, that truck is beautiful. HRP

I did too. I used the stock tank for years, but the filler neck was a little damaged and didn't seal well, so when the tank was full it would slosh out onto the cowl when I turned. And the wife always complained about the gas smell when we drove in it. So I mounted the new tank I posted earlier in this thread. I still have the stock tank, it just isn't hooked up. Maybe I should put a T in the line and hook it back up and put some gas in it to keep it from rusting out.

Fabricated an aluminum 12 gallon tank that sits under the rear of the bed. The entire rear of the frame is custom.

  28. No photo, but if the back area between frame rails is open, a thin 49 Merc gas tank can fit nicely. I had one in my 29 Tudor in the sixties. I had split rear wishbones and open driveshaft. It won’t work if car is too low (if driveshaft is too high).

Gas filler like 36 Ford. A very young me.

  29. I am still running the stock Model A tank on my Tudor. I have been for thirty five plus years with no problems. I see no reason to do otherwise now.
