Projects 1930 Ford Coupe, another vintage hotrod salvage project.

So we all know how much I like to punish myself with more work, but this little coupe just caught my eye. Bought it last weekend. So I am the 3rd owner of it, last titled in 1970. Texas car its whole life DFW area. Body is stellar in the rust department, rear trunk is perfect, only rust on body is passenger cowl lower. Bad part is its motor is toast, someone welded up a hole in the side of the block with a stick welder, few cracks here and there also along with one cylinder with 5 psi of compression, yeah probably stuck valves but cracked block probably wont ever be right. So trying to source another banger motor right now locally...

I’ll be darn, I thought I was the only one with a bondo’ed block! 218 Dodge I had. My guy took extra care though and painted the block afterwards. Lol

I am drooling, always wanted a Steel 5 Window Model A.

 

I have an original A motor with a knock when running. I dont
see any cracks? Now I have a replacement motor and should not need the
one in the car now. Keep me in mind if you may be interested.

 

Thanks man, I will definitely keep it in mind, my buddy has a rebuilt motor thats been sitting 15 years never ran, I am trying to grab that but if he needs it then I may take you up on that, I have family in Morgan city so I can make a good road trip out of it.

 

The crack is in the oil pan area and really wouldn't cause a problem except an oil leak from oil splash, JB weld fix on a running motor wouldn't worry me. Probably threw a rod at sometime but not near the water jacket and not really structural. Looks like a good body , will be a nice project.

 

Isn't it amazing how one day its they're pride and joy, then one day it gets shoved outside to die

 

Yeah, normally wouldn't worry me either, but I've got a cracked head and one cylinder with 5psi of compression rest at zero, so going to pull the head and see if we have some stuck valves or shot pistons etc...

Took a little time and got the head off... Only broke 2 studs....

So interesting tidbit I have never seen in a block deck ever before... Anyone clue me in on this?



Here is how she looks inside...No ridge hardly at all at top of cylinder, no real rust pitting in cylinders I have seen yet... No overbore stamping on top of pistons... I know its been into at some point in its life due to that repair on the side of the block... I've seen alot worse for sure...

 

Cool start. Just in case other replacements for the repaired block don't work out, I have a good block as well as quite a few other Model A engine parts for sale. Downside is distance might be an issue since I'm in Southeast Missouri. But, send a PM if you have any interest.

Update to start the new work week out...

So we pulled the motor thursday. Went well.... Decided to tackle this front crossmember damage. Huge hole but no cracks, so made a new piece and welded it all in etc...



Onto motor..... Brought it up to a buddy who wrenches on bangers some and had him give me the run down on how a few things come out as I have never removed valves in a banger. So verdict is block repair is great, welded inside and out, Babbitt is good on rods, everything was turned 10 thou when it was apart at some point. Standard bore cleaned up perfectly with a hone. Crank turns super easy, minimal endplay for thrust. I may have to pull main shims at some point but were not quite there yet... Valves took some major lapping but they cleaned up and sealed up good... He has some stainless valves but I am thinking of leaving these original since they are not cracked and show no real signs of failure other than a little rust pitting on the top of a few... Here are some in progress photos... The photos stopped when we had 4 head studs break off in the block... If that hadn't have happened we would have had the motor built in a day... So will go up friday and finish up hopefully...

 

Well, last friday was slow moving for sure. We got valves adjusted, few other things handled, then realized we had the wrong size rings. So here I am waiting on new set of rings... None the less, we dingle ball honed the cylinders, they look stellar.

So the last few days got after cleaning the frame and some things up... Brush painted the frame with POR15, dang that stuff is shinny.... Not quite sold on shiny frame right now...

 

Don't worry about the shiny - I used POR15 on my frame, and it will dull since it is not UV resistant (at least the stuff wasn't when I used it about 6 years ago). I am still happy with the results though.

Were getting somewhere now.... New rings and put it all back together, now to rebuild starter, and a few other systems, find me a 94 carburetor to build and install and see if we can make some fire.

Progress has been a bit slower but still progress...

So finally got the top wood kit in after 1 month...
8 hrs to install, Alot of pushing, and prodding to get it back in...

 

I am waiting on a carb now...

But motor is ready other than a carb and studs... And wiring...

Applying my best Google-Fu, I found one reference to a McCord Gasket Co ad in a 1935 Motor magazine, apparently listing part no. 5571 as a head gasket:

Unfortunately, given its age, Google Books only posts it in snippet view. As has become common lately, the snippet they display has nothing to do with the text searched. Anyone have an old McCord catalog or volume 63 of Motor? Any guesses how it became imprinted?
