Hot Rods 61 Falcon hood scoop ideas

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fadingfastsd, Jun 24, 2021.

  1. Anybody have any cool ideas for a hood scoop on a 61 Falcon stock hood? I'd like to do something interesting, but don't really like any of the aftermarket options. Don't really want to go teardrop hood, but haven't totally ruled that out. Definitely looking to do a functional scoop. Motor is a Holley injected 302.

    Thanks!

    Here's the front end:

One thing I will say first is if your hood is in really nice shape I wouldn't cut a big hole in it. Save it, put it aside and find a so-so hood to cut-up.
It depends on what kind of a statement you want to make, subtle or in your face. Something more aggressive would be the old Ford dump truck scoop. A pretty sharp looking scoop would include the 55-57 T-bird. I have no idea what either would look like on a 1st gen Falcon though.

  3. It’s hard to beat a Thunderbolt style hood…I’d put your hood to the side and throw the Tbolt hood on..let’s see more pics of the car

    how about the hood scoop on '62, etc? - or, '50s to '60s T-bird or '65 to '67 Pontiac GTO? 20210624_184818.jpg 20210624_164132.jpg 20210624_164239 (1).jpg 20210624_185902.jpg 20210624_185726.jpg

  5. I like that pic you posted. Is that the Ford dump truck scoop? Any idea what years/models to look for? Cool idea thanks!

  6. I agree on the 62 hood scoop with the chrome. Was thinking about getting a 62 hood and cutting that out maybe. Could be pretty cool.

Does anybody know, what year Falcon hoods are interchangeable size-wise with a 61? Can I just bolt on a 62 hood?

  7. I'll have to take some other more recent pics of the car, I haven't in awhile. Here's some others from a few weeks ago.

Nice car, I'd keep the hood stock, would make a great sleeper.
I knew a guy in the 70's with a green one like yours, black steel wheels, stock ride height, hidden traction bars, etc, the thing had a killer 221 with a T-10 and a nine inch rear.
Also had a fairly quiet exhaust system, he could really sucker them in for a street race.

  9. Thanks! It's already a great sleeper. You don't notice much until you hear it get moving, or see the slapper bars underneath or notice the 5 lug 15" wheels. It's a roller cam 5.0L, hooker super comps, weiand stealth intake, Ford racing F303 cam, holley sniper injected, with a T5 and falcon sprint rear. It really moves and is a blast to drive. Very easy to pull in some suckers on the street haha. I love it and have alot of fun with it.

I'm not too concerned with the hood, it was a junkyard hood and has some hail damage dents and scratches up close. The pictures definitely don't show the imperfections with it, and that's why I'm not too concerned with cutting it up for a scoop.

You have a nice Falcon but are skirting "the line" razor thin. Car is ok but by mentioning and showing the FI system it's close to being deleted for off topic. Show the car but keep the induction and ECU talk out of your discussion of the car if you want this thread to survive.

I'm building a big block '61 gasser. I'm toying with the idea of "stretching" the subtle factory bulge, The thought is to extend it an inch or two in each direction and then cut an opening in the front.

With that sleeper look you got going, I would not put a scoop on it, Looks great just like it is....

  13. Gosh ... I think I just fell in love. That Falcon is to die for. I love that super slick clean original look on the outside with edgy modern tweaks.

I will be doing a V8 conversion from a 170 6 Cyl to a 289 Windsor with a C4 soon. I would like to see what you come up with in the way of a scoop as I had been thinking something similar for my 64 Aussie Falcon.

  14. Very cool little car….has the rear end been narrowed or the shocks moved ? Looks like you got some tire under there..I’m still gonna go with a fiberglass Tbolt hood…especially with the steel wheels…

  15. Depending on how much air you want to get in, and how much you are willing to interrupt the original lines of the car, you could consider the bonnet piece on a 64 Aussie Falcon. It is sympathetic with the lines of the hood and doesn't require too much modification for airflow.

While the original is solid die-cast alloy it wouldn't take much to cut out the slots that you need and insert a gauze if you like..or leave it open.

The best benefit is ... in the US you will have a look that no one else has, or has seen. If you are interested I can look around for you and ship it over :)

When I do my V8 conversion, that is what I will be doing to mine.

My dad has a '63, he removed the chrome trim and cut the recessed part out. He used a piece of round stock, with a curve bent in it to support the center of the scoop, and built a box on the underside of the hood that seals to the air cleaner. It looks great and is pretty slick. I'll grab some pics of it in the next couple of days.

here's a pic that I found on my phone of the underside of the hood. I'll get over there and get one of the scoop inlet in a day or two... falcon.jpg

  18. It will bolt on, but the leading edge is markedly different as are the fenders so it's not an easy swap. '60-61 are the same, '62-63 are too but don't interchange. If considering grafting a steel scoop to your hood you might consider a '58-60 T-bird scoop.

  19. I've been thinking about doing something like that. I do like the stock hood bulge already, doing something along those lines is definitely an idea.

  20. Yours is killer! I love that no post look, super cool. I really wish the 61 had that. Really nice car.

  21. The rear axle is out of a 63 Falcon Sprint. It has not been modified. Not sure if they were any shorter than a standard Falcon axle? It does have a little wider tire in the rear. Stock shocks and locations.

  22. I like this idea a lot. Functional, still pretty understated. Very nice. Are those Aussie bonnet pieces repopped? Or reasonable to find?

  23. I love that! Would definitely like to see the top side of the hood. Looks really cool underneath.

  24. Thanks very much, that was the interchange info I was looking for on Falcon hoods. Appreciate it. I do like the Thunderbird hood scoop, that is always an option.

  25. Here's some pics of the axle setup from last time it was on the lift. The PO did the axle swap, but I don't believe it's been shortened. Not sure though.

As to Loudbangs' comment, he was just looking out for your best interests.
Better to hear it from us than to have a moderator give it the 86 because of OT stuff.
Your car is very cool, I'd hate to have your thread disappear, it happens.

Dude give me a break that was a suggestion not a complaint if I reported your post if would be gone already. So go ahead post away all the photos of the EFI and ECU.

  28. It felt really picky to be focusing on that instead of the point of the thread, and a lot more like a complaint than a suggestion. It was a couple words, hardly drawing any attention to it. Not sure why we're even still talking about how this car gets it's gas. I'm specifically looking for hood scoop suggestions, like I said. Not looking for irrelevant arguments, just trying to make my car even more fun.

I am personally offended by the high tech fuel injection wizardry being flaunted on this "classic" car. I now feel so bad about my decrepit carbureted turd struggling to sip non-injected go-juice that I can no longer focus on the search for or provide a helpful recommendation for a cool hood scoop. Way to ruin my day with this off-topic assault and insult to naturally aspirated rust buckets everywhere...

Now I'm laughing too hard to keep this up. Love the Falcon and had a blast ripping it last week. I second that dump truck hood scoop idea, or the Aussie Falcon scoop would be original here in the US. Great ideas!
