Technical Jaguar suspension for 1950s Chevy Suburban???

  1. I am looking at a 50 Chevy suburban project truck. The original suspension is gone. It's sitting on blocks. But the seller has the front & rear suspension out of a 1984 Jaguar sitting a-side for the suburban. Part of his asking price is based on that Jag suspension.
I know nothing about Jag suspension? Can any one tell me if a 84 Jag suspension would be good under that truck? Or is it junk to use???

I know @titus has put them under Ford F trucks before and that’s about where my knowledge ends.

Very common conversion down here however not HAMB friendly. When you add front end, rubber bush it and use appropriate uni joint on steering

  5. Had the front clip under my 50 fleetline and worked great.

As long as the width is correct it should work.

Jaguar is a heavy car so weight should be close to your ‘burb

Parts are not very expensive to rebuild the suspension and brakes

rear rotors are a pain right on the inside of your pee hole to replace and so are the parking brake slippers

so do them now while they are out of the truck

    Good luck

  6. I see what you all are saying, "not HAMB approved" I don't want to use it at all. I have a complete running 57 Chevy chassis I 'm planning on sitting the panel truck body on. It's a 52 clam shell Suburban, complete with all the interior & it's a clam shell back door. That alone is very much in demand. But 6 grand is a bit much for it's condition. I would be wanting to sell
the Jag suspension to try to make the panels price closer to the value I put on the truck.
Is there a value in the suspension.

A couple of observations/opinions. If you don’t want to use the Jag parts, any reason will do. But if your “57 Chevy running chassis” is a passenger car unit, it is really unsuitable for the truck body. You would be better off in work required and final outcome using the original truck chassis with Jag suspension units. Or alternatively the stock chassis rails with ‘other choices’ for suspension upgrades, including reworking the stock leaf springs, shocks, etc, possibly a dropped axle.

As far as being ‘not HAMB friendly’, there is no shortage of naysayers on this forum. I disagree with that opinion and a search of HAMB archives will turn up several threads and lots of posts from a few years ago when this topic was widely discussed.

The less desirable inboard rear disc brakes can be easily replaced with later axle/brake assemblies that use outboard disc. As for value of the Jag suspension assemblies, I think they could vary between a couple hundred to several hundred, depending on condition, completeness, axle ratio, etc. To be clear, I AM NOT trying to persuade you to use the Jag stuff, only pointing out there is more to the decision than whether or not it is ‘HAMB’ friendly…..unless you choose to believe that after investigating prior threads and it is the main determining factor in your decision.

  9. OK thanks, I understand. I hate to pass-up the truck. The Suburbans have gotten so popular that a-lot of the hard to find parts, are now being re-popped, like the seats. But this one is already complete. Just no running gear. It also comes with a L24 motor & trans sitting aside. I no nothing of these motors. He clams it's in the LS family? None of the running gear means anything to me except to recover some of the price of the body...

    @oldschoolantiqueauto

There is another option to consider. Several hot rod parts vendors are offering new chassis for popular Ford and Chevy trucks with running gear (aka ‘rollers’) designed and built to just bolt on your body. Expect to spend $10,000, give or take some, depending on options. It dramatically reduces build time and provides a solid foundation. Depending on your skill set and equipment, that $ figure may be more attractive than you might initially think. It costs you nothing to research what’s available.

  11. Have full Jaguar IFS and IRS on my 52 GMC pickup. Same basic frame as your Suburban. See avatar pic. Much preferable to a frame swap since you keep the original frame. PM me for details if you want more info.

  12. Thanks Ray, Yea I already have a real big project," my 39 COE " taking most of my time & cash. I would want to just put it back to semi stock aria suspension just to get it to the next level. Get it drive-able, new glass, seat covers & cleaned up to present for the next guy to build.
