Quarter midgets had a 5 hp (?) Continental one-lunger. That's a full on midget

Got the coupe back from getting the extractors and exhaust system done ,,because the head was a large port model he had to use inch and five eights tube to best match the holes in the plates ,it’s a bit tight in there now ,,I am completing accelerator linkage and the fuel line with electric shut off and fuel pump from original tank before firing the engine ,,

 

Progress! Going to bd fun.

 

They had continental 2.83 hp 1 cyl engines The motors were used in world war II in navy boats as a bilge pump... they never failed and had durability built for endurance

 

My buddy built one of these with a little blower from a later model thunderbird, made the intake out of an exhaust manifold. The thing screams!

Got our 181 mercruiser powered coupe going a few months ago ,,adapted to a 3 speed 3.03 mustang trans and to the A diff through the original torque tube ,,goes great ,,not overpowered but gets along great in city traffic ,,comfortably does 55-60 mph on the highway,,not may people know what the engine is when the hood is up most are amused when you say it’s a boat engine,,,,,

 

Nice car. You could tell them it's a forklift engine if it would make them feel better.

Hey SamIam, what are ya building? I have one of these in my A. Builder put a 2 jet carb on it and it runs like crap. Can't turn right or it stalls. Runs real rich. Just curious wanted to pick your brain.

 

I have a Mercruiser 4cyl in my model a . That carb is a Roch,2GC mine was the same way till I put a fuel reg. on it 3psi fuel press is what it likes!!

That is not an Iron Duke, its a 153 Chevy...A Duke is a later 151 Pontiac design ,has a crossflow head and many parts that wont interchange with the 153. They made good power for class racing but in stock form had a habit of cracked heads

The 153 was a shortened inline six Chevy while the Pontiac was a 1/2 a 389 v-8 IIRC

 

There was a Pontiac 4 cylinder that was half of a V8 but it was not the Iron Duke.

 

So was the iron duke a clean sheet of paper ?

 

Yes. It looks similar to the GM 153 that was used in earlier years. I believe the Iron Duke 151 came about in 77 or 78. Originally the intake and exhaust manifolds were on the same side. In 81 I think they went to a cross-flow head, intake on one side and exhaust on the other. The bell housing pattern was different also. The early 151's had the standard Chevy style bellhousing.

 

This is a GM 153.

 

This is a later 151 Iron Duke. Easy to see the difference in bellhousing mounting between the two.

 

The more you get into these engines the more confusing it gets. The 153 was the beginning being 2/3 of a 230 L6 used in the '62 Chevy II. The 151 was derived from the Brazilian version of the US 153. It evolved from there. There are many versions of the 151. Then the 181 was thrown int the mix and along the way one piece rear seals changed things as well. There are different rear bolt patterns, AMC versions, many heads which may or may not fit. The cranks can all be swapped and the timing gears are the same as Chevy sixes back to '39 but part numbers don't show it. There is at least as much misinformation as information scattered everywhere.

Generac Generator, 181 cubic inch...Chevy11 powered. (Stock Model A was 200 cubic inch)

 

My A sedan would look good with a 153. I could be cool like @Tim

Gasoline Junkie do you have any more info on the blown iron duke engine you posted? That thing is so cool.

 

@Tman fits like it was made for it. With a stock valve cover I didn’t even need to touch the firewall. Stock A torque tube etc. felt bizarre to just put it there and have it just go right in lol. 100% stock flat floor as well

 

that’s not an iron duke it’s a 153. I believe he found it on the side of the road left out for trash. Brought it home and built a fun blower set up for it. There’s a video on YouTube, maybe two? Of it running
