Technical Strange brake issue

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by milwscruffy, Jul 14, 2021.

  1. After I bench bled it I plugged both ports with the correct fittings and the master was indeed hard as a rock. The closest I could clamp the lines would be at the rubber hoses by the calipers which would be no problem. I'll check things out that way once I get a helper again.

Yes the brake pedal has two holes, the upper one for manual and the lower one for power. The rod is in the correct lower hole. EDIT: wrong, I'm an idiot !

Do your back brakes need adjusted up tighter? That may bring the pedal up also.

  5. You know when you're a f*cking moron, own up to it. Won't know until I re-bleed things tomorrow, but today I found a glaring error and also installed a new disc / disc combination valve along with double checking everything I could think of. As for the error, I would have bet the rod was in the bottom hole on the brake pedal which is for power, WRONG !!! After eating some crow, I had to take the booster out ( can't get at the front jam nut ) to lengthen the rod to line up with the bottom hole about a 1/2" longer total. I will power bleed the system tomorrow with the rod off the pedal. I have the rod set up where there will be 3/16" free play between the rod and booster. The rod has a rear jam nut where I can fine tune things if need be. Sure hope this cures things. Call be old and blind !

  6. Power bled the system, pushed 4 ounces out each corner @ 15 lbs pressure, have about 1/8" free play in the pedal and happy to report I HAVE BRAKES !!! Thanks to all who helped and helped me get my head out of my ass. Time to see what 611 HP and 655 ft lbs of torque do to a big old wagon. Thanks again.

That’s what I say every time I make a perfect double flare, then see the fitting laying to the side. Then do it again 3 minutes later, and the damned fitting is still laying off to the side. Now let’s go get more line. Sigh…

  10. You gotta post a video of that !!!!!!
Glad it was an easy one.

and as as side note, don’t stick your head up “there” that’s how you get pink eye !

  11. Well brakes are fine, now the 700R4 trans won't come out of OD. My trans guy is coming over tomorrow. Double checked the TV cable adjustment, looks to be spot on. When going down the road you can downshift to 3rd and it'll come out of OD, however the only way it comes out of OD at a stop is to downshift to 1st, otherwise it wants to kill the engine. He thinks it's a vavlebody issue. Oh well, not that I don't know how to put it on jackstands by now...

i thought a locking overdrive needed a switch on the brake pedal to unlock it

The 700 can be wired up (as I recall) to lock up the TC solenoid through the 4th gear pressure switch. I don’t recall the particulars, but don’t think it involves the brake switch, but I could be easily off base. My understanding is when it goes to OD, it then locks the converter (using the pressure switch) so when it down shifts it unlocks.

  14. Using the kit from Rebel wire, works off a pressure switch. Have had good results in the past with their stuff. It might be the lock-up solenoid. Will know more tomorrow.

I’d think the lock up solenoid is doing its job, I’d be inclined to think the pressure switch is sticking “on” applying OD.

But I’m not a wart on a transmission guys ass. It was years ago when I was looking into using a 700R4 while doing a V8 swap in my ‘59.

  16. It was the external pressure switch that came with the Rebel kit. I happened to have an extra one at the shop and all good now.

The shop that rebuilt my 700R4 set the lockup up hydraulically. No wires to the trans but I get lockup, a little early but it works.

  18. The victim in all this, getting close for it's first outing Sunday. Figure if I show the front view it's almost on topic...Thanks for the help again. 215532116_10219116167964286_9084034555175853264_n.jpg 216101156_10219116166244243_8906627453024837099_n.jpg 215542205_10219116168444298_7568368947925266432_n.jpg
