It was very commonplace in those days. I remember bears lined up by the roadside catching the food tourists would toss to them in '54 at Yellowstone. One time we got stopped in traffic and a bear stuck his head inside the car. I forget what I had been tossing to them. That was scary. We were in a '53 Lincoln hardtop with the windows down. That was the last time we did that

 

They eat for a living and are pretty good at it.
