Preparing For The Future

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Ryan, Aug 11, 2021.

  1. ..............With all due respect, this is all wrong. We use the Maryland forum to help each other out on a local basis, alert members to upcoming events and buy and sell stuff that others probably wouldn't be interested in or can't be easily shipped great distances. As far as getting the benefits without offering benefits to the rest of us, hows about joining the HAMB Alliance.:)...........Don.

  2. I think from what I have seen is your group, the HAMB Chapel and 52-59 Fords seem to be the only real active groups. I dug around in the groups a few weeks back because I was curious. I forgot I ran a Sodak group!?

  3. .........That's kinda my point. If all of the forums that are unused were eliminated, the few remaining ones that are active shouldn't be much of a drain on the system.:)

  4. I can now see where the social sites might not be cost effective. If they go away, so be it. We can all adjust and carry on.
What I don’t understand is the bashing of the sites. Just because you don’t use them why throw stones.

  5. Yeah, we were agreeing. I am sure the boss will come up with something. But other groups already operate on the main board. You have the Banger folks for one and the Cyclecar followers as another example.

  6. Don, I think that if they are inactive it’s not a drain on the system. I have no idea, just a guess.

Seems like there may be a way to just do something maybe more like the “antiquated” or “classified” maybe considering we may only be talking about a real small number of social groups that anyone seems concerned with losing.

I should know not to open a can of worms I'm not willing to eat!
    Sorry Don, nothing personal.

Kind of how I view it.
What I wanted to say is what actually happens on these social forums that can't be done on the general discussion side of the HAMB.

  12. Probably just the Chapel ,,,,,everything else should be on topic.
And it still goes back to how much Ryan would have to spend overall.
This software thing doesn’t care if you have one group or many,,,it’s still about the same money ,,,,,extra is extra .
    And,,it’s his money .
I’m not against it,,,,,I’m just trying to look at it from his viewpoint .
He’s a reasonable guy,,,,,if you guys really need it,,,,and he can afford it,,,,,maybe he will .
Also,,,,,it is an add on to the system,,,,,I think he did a lot of work last time to make it work .

I thought we prided ourselves on being an anti-social group.............;)
It can sometimes be an ornery horse. You just need to get on and ride it.

The HAMB will live on. Of that you can be sure.

from what I have seen of the social forums is that people hang out there to talk off topic crap that this site doesn't and shouldn't care about. I don't know why Ryan should put any effort and expense into a bunch of posts that are considered off topic on the main board. Seems really counter productive to me. The Hamb has a very narrow focus and anything that doesn't belong shouldn't be provided a "hiding place" here at Ryans expense.... Just my opinion....

  17. I’ve spent a little time noodling around the Garage Journal and I really like the new layout. ‘Looking forward to seeing the new look over here. I participate in a couple of Social Groups that I’ll miss if they go away (OFC & Virginia HAMB). Keep up the good work.

Man I for one love the Hamb Chapel. I see what folks are saying about off topic stuff but for instance the Chapel is a group of us that love traditional hot rods and incorporate that into our Christian beliefs. I for one needs to read what posted there often.

I trust Ryan will do the best he can to keep the site safe and accommodate everyone. but, of course, resources are never unlimited. Ryan, thanks in advance.

I'm active and access the '52-'59 Ford group daily. I've gleaned tons of useful info from that site and contributed a bit myself! It would be devastating to see that disappear! I understand there's not a lot of traffic on the majority of social groups but is there any way to separate the few that are active/successfully moderated and keep those in the loop?

  26. I’m another one who checks in at the ‘52 to ‘59 Ford group on a daily basis. There are a lot of helpful discussions and plenty of interesting historical information. I hope there will be a place for all of that information as the HAMB is updated. I do appreciate the efforts that keep this site safe and free of spam.

I think your initial plan is well justified. Every post on these sub-groups makes the main forum that much more of a dull place. I believe you can probably find a work around where all that content can be archived. I have been checking the HAMB every day for about fifteen years. I don’t comment every day, because there’s just not that much to say.

I’m interested in 50’s Fords. I had no idea that there was a separate 52-59 Ford group. What is the point of keeping your discussions private? Why would anyone expect a person with the job title “content creator” to hide all this great content in some sub-forum?

I was working as a software development Engineer 25 years ago, when the internet was a new thing. There is absolutely no way I would consider allowing any kind of “back door” sub thread. It’s like designing a ship with a known leak. Find a solution to a problem, or disallow that functionality.

This all sounds pretty high tech for a low tech traditional site. Are you sure you don't want to just do this with a manual type writer? LMAO! Sorry Boss had to say it. You are the man, I have total faith in your direction for the HAMB. Let her rip tater chip. Thanks for all you do.

I find it a little disturbing that a lot of the guys who want to keep the Social Forums going (at @Ryan 's expense) aren't even "Alliance" members...they want it their way...and for FREE.
Maybe if some of you Social Forum guys would pony-up and become Alliance members, the extra cost might not be such an issue!!!
