Hi I have seen 40 coupe with roof chop and Tudor doors on it online I live in New Zealand and would like like to do this with a full rebuild on my 39 coupe I have a set of 39 tudor doors Looking for any advise please Any and all help appreciated Cheers from Nz Ricky morris
Can't help much with the process, but I saw a '39 coupe done that way at the "back to the 50's" in St. Paul. It looked terrific and was very nicely done. The top resembled the '39-'40 Merc with no quarter window.
Only ones I've seen are the 3-window style coupe mentioned as seen at Back to the Fifties, and a local coupe with a chopped top and slanted B pillars. I know the builders of each car, and they both involved MUCH slicing and dicing. I think the slanted coupe actually used doors about halfway between coupe and tudor length. I feel if you use longer doors but don't slant the pillars, the shortened quarter windows will look goofy. Might need to move the back half of the roof backwards to accommodate.
Yes that’s the car I don’t know if it’s appropriate to mention Gary’s car on here but his car is unbelievable and I just saw pictures of his car and after looking at thousands online knew that’s what I want to build so have got pictures big job so worth it tho
The doors on this 40 coupe are from a 1940 Fordor. You have to trim the top of the doors.. I would think 39 Fordor doors would also work, if trimmed.
I have 1939 Fordor front doors on my 1940 deluxe coupe I like the 1 piece glass (smokers window) I don't smoke but I think it looks better and no noise from the vent windows and less possible leaks I am uploading some photos
ok finally found the 2 reworked doors trimmed to fit and reweld seem I choose to cut down the original folded sheet metal over (about 1/2" ) and cut out section to make the removed section fit as stock coupe top. I have trouble, uploading the word doc I will try another post
I don't think the OP is looking for replacement doors, I think he wants longer doors with either slanted B pillars or a 3w coupe conversion. Putting 4 door front doors on works as a replacement but doesn't change the look any. It would be nice if someone had a picture of the car from Back to the 50's which was mentioned, to get an idea of the look he's going for.
I was thinking he wanted longer doors but that is a huge undertaking and major body work that is why I added to the reworked 39 fordoor doors
I fully agree on that totally but have seen one where back pillar rounded with a roof chop still has back quarter windows so ver cool Not sure I can upload picture of another mans car to show what it is?
The 38 club coupe doors are longer than on the regular coupes. I'm not sure how they compare to tudor sedan doors, tho. Below is a picture of the club coupe (not my car). And here is a regular coupe (not mine either). Maybe the club coupe door is what you are looking for? Or find a club coupe and use a regular coupe roof and quarter window on the rear portion?
Very cool aye I’m 63 I’m going to do this to my coupe and daily drive until I die life is good So just put feelers out to se if anyone new much about this process I don’t like to bother the owner but I guess if you don’t ask well you won’t know We have some very gifted body work men here in New Zealand cheers for all comments to all Very cool site this very cool Ricky morris
I am not clear on what you are wanting to do but here is a 3window with longer doors slanted B pillars. Another View attachment 5140971 View attachment 5140972 View attachment 5140975 Even though I have shown many examples I don't want anyone to think I am in favor of making this change or any change to the body lines of the 39-40 ford deluxe coupes. Some people like it though and a few can pull it off well enough to make it worth while. I do like the last illustration however. I am going to look for a 40 coupe that I think Sam Foose built many years ago and will post it here if i find it. Here are the pics I could find of Sam Foose's 40 I think it has the sedan doors. Not sure though. View attachment 5140984
Wasn't there a thread on here not too long ago where a guy lowered the roof and used different doors? I believe he shortened the car a little to make it all work. It was somebody's father who had done it years ago...
