Building a bobber truck is very similar to building a T- bucket. You have to have a good eye to get them to look great. Building a hiboy 32 is way easier...maybe more expensive, but aesthetically way less complicated. With a bobber or bucket ALL the proportions are up to the builder. With a deuce, a 106”or close wheelbase is standard with the length of the hood being the variable. It’s hard not to like a “hits the nail on the head” bobber or bucket...but the majority of them miss the mark. I’m thinking most of the hate comes from all the misses and near misses.
Are bobbers Hot Rods...yep! Are all of them cool...no. But if the owners/builders are having fun...God bless them!

Before this thread came along, I had never even thought about a section of the Hot Rod genre being called "Bobbers" and in my mind they were just another hot rod or maybe even a rat rod..........but no real thought that they were infact a sub-group with an actual distiction from other sub groups in rodding.
I would like to thank all those who enlightened me and provided pictures showing some excellent examples. I WILL take note of them in the future, and I think they are pretty neat................:)

This is perfect. And his/that avatar is stunning in person. I photo'd it at several Cheaterama's in Milwaukee.

Was just reading an old thread about chopping, and came across this. I thought it was one of the best comments I have read on the HAMB, and maybe somewhat apt here....................Thanks to @Dreddybear.

At some point you can question everything. Why take the fenders off? Why swap engines? What's the point of the whole thing? Mild chop looks good. Heavy chop looks mean. It's not a fad. I wouldn't say us younger builders aren't doing anything cause it's the "In" thing to do. Nothing about these things is "in". We exist quite outside the norm.

I might get some shirts printed with that. "We exist quite outside the norm." Brilliant.....

I am 72. Can someone here tell me -WHEN- 'back then' was?
As far a "rare tradition", I have observed chopped, channeled, and shortened mid-'30s pickups since the 1950s.
The channeled, and shortened Olds Rocket powered '36 Ford pickup I owned in '64 was far from being the first.
True, the '35 ups were not as desirable, popular or 'respected' as the '34 and earlier models. But us poor boys still were proud of what we crafted with what we had, and with our own hands, even if they were seldom featured in national magazines.
Its not that chopped, channeled, and shortened '35-'38 pickups were not being built, just that they were ignored by the dictators of what was acceptable.

Doesn’t sound like much has. changed

I’ll change the line from my post to “rarely photographed tradition”

Nice truck, very creative engineering to include the removable hard top. The truck looks well done, but the dude must be tall, he looks more cramped in that thing than I am in my 30, and I'm 6'. Anyway, I like the truck, but that song, ugggghhhh. I had to turn the speakers off, I couldn't take that. Nice truk though.

  14. Yeah, it's nice that he knows a few chord changes.
Actually looks cool in the garage next to that woodie/gasser/4x4. Drivetrain is all good stuff too...But the fad stuff?
Rockabilly girls? Fad ( wonder where he got that idea?) Tiki hut? Fad. Surfboards? Fad. (where is he? In Colorado?) Skulls everywhere? Tacky and r.r..
I can't help thinking the whole thing is a fad to him. Not exactly HAMB material, IMO

    A custom is a custom. Doesn't matter if it's a truck or a car.

Copy and paste the pm's up here for everyone to see. That takes away the hiding place when they are being inappropriate. I got some pm's from him over another thread and was going to do this, but pulled out at the last minute. He won't get that grace from me a second time................

You also have the option to report a pm. If it's bad, they'll ban the sender.

Yep, there's that option too, but sometimes I think they maybe need to be exposed to the direct sunlight. Nothing modifies behaviour quicker than scrutiny..........;)

And PM's should never, ever, be used to pick fights, push personal beliefs or political views, or belittle or attack others................just sayin'..............
