    Hello,
The early photos of Scotty’s Muffler Service Modified Roadster shows fuel injection. they were successful in both the show circuit and at the So Cal area dragstrips. The earlier runs/results, prior to 1959, at the Riverside Raceway provided the surprises for the show quality race car.

By the time we saw it in the pits at the huge Riverside Raceway drag meet in 1959, it had some extra boost to make it go a little faster than before. The show car quality of the build was evident. But with the addition of the Paxton/McCullogh type centrifugal supercharger, it just looked and sounded a lot more powerful.

The whole car is/was done well and for a muffler shop, we all noticed the cool smooth bend equal length individual headers coming from the Ardun powered motor.

What would you expect from a cool Scotty’s Muffler Service in San Bernardino?

The modified roadster class... The old saying of "Chrome it, if it does not go..." is not applicable in this case.

It was not a Modified Roadster, but an (altered) Roadster.

    Hello,

The time period from 1956 to the time when modified roadsters were lumped into the same classification as Altered Roadsters, they had their own identity. It was not a street roadster and some classes were labeled Hot Roadsters. That was the preview of the Altered Roadsters that seem to fascinate people today.

But, Altered Roadsters were not what was at the beginning in So Cal and other dragstrips. That period of drag racing came just before the fall into oblivion for those original Modified Roadsters for the fuel dragsters and funny cars.

Modified Roadster classes were all over So Cal dragstrips and into Arizona, during the time period noted.

1957 results for Modified Roadster Division:

Perhaps, in your time period of articles and magazines, you have been locked into calling everything an Altered Class something or other. But during this time period of hot rodding and drag racing, they were Modified Roadsters. And, they were just cool looking. They set records left and right with the continued development. Not altereds, but Modified Roadsters.

    Jnaki --

If you look at the result lists that you posted, you'll see that roadsters usually were divided into 3 categories -- Street Roadster, (Altered) Roadster, and Modified Roadster. The "Roadster" class cars were built to Altered specifications -- 25% engine setback. And, for your information, Hot Roadsters were (Altered) Roadsters running on fuel. Regular just Roadsters were Altered Roadsters which ran gas.

How do I know? We ran one at Colton, Fontana, Riverside, Long Beach . . . by the way, sponsored by Scotty's Muffler Service.
