Belongs in a A/FX build, IMO. Preferably a '65 Cyclone

My choice would be a 66 Fairlane 500. It would have been a fantastic limited production car had the engine been able to run in nascar.

Though not completely visible, this is still one of my favorite in-car shots of a SOHC engine.

The '65 Comet A/FX cars w/ blown FI Cammers were the wildest door slammers ever built, IMO.

They are still out there, NOS M/T 427SOHC. Sold by Mickey Thompson after the Bonneville program ended. A brand new Streamliner spare that was carried to the salt flats and never needed. Dyno time only from the 60s. :eek:Note the 1" thick bottom end girdle and blower support. WOW, some real history here!

so how much power do these engines make from the factory as they were used in a then newMustang ? Other words no blowers ,injectors or other aftermarket parts..
Same engine today using what has been learned over the years but still more or less as produced, how much torque and HP? thanks

SOHC were never installed from the factory in any production cars, apart from prototypes. They were only ever sold as an over the counter purchase.

    Ford factory HP ratings were:-
    • 615 hp @ 7000 rpm with a single 4-barrel and 515ft/lb torque; and
    • 657 hp @ 7500 with dual carburetors and 575 ft/lb torque. The engines weigh 680 lbs.

The only 427 SOHC builder in recent years I know is Jon Kasse. His street engine (11:1 CR) makes 825 hp. The bump is from a head he helped redesign. The rest of the engine is reproduced like the old ones w/ stronger metals. 2X4 Holleys, dual-plane intake like the original. From the horse's mouth-

Street registered, note license plate and no front brakes. Radiator must be somewhere? Screenshot 2021-11-01 at 11-01-04 Facebook.png

If Ford would have gotten the green light from nascar and homologated the engine for regular production it wouldn't have had those numbers. They would have for sure dummied it down with a single 480 cfm Autolite carb, weak camshafts, restrictive exhaust.....much like they did with the Boss 429 Mustang.

The text says, 2 radiators mounted under the cab. And it does have cowl steering ! I never knew who built that car, but he built the SMI Motivator, Rocket LSR car that Kitty O'Neil drove at the Alvord Desert in 1976, topping 512 MPH. Pretty innovative guy, Bill Frederick.

I agree. All of the engines had a lot of untapped potential because they weren't allowed to breathe properly. The front suspensions really restricted everything, cramping the engine bays. When guys started chopping shock towers, things started happening.
