Tom is still around, great racer, on FB. He really got that old car to wail...took guts to drive over 190 with the old Miller rails that probably dated to the 1930s...
By accident I ended up with the motor/trans that was in the coupe. Saw it in an ad in Craigslist. The seller didn't really know the historical significance of it and neither did I until I researched the name of the deceased owner.
Two more pics of same car at Calder Park Dragstrip, ( 1320 feet ) mid 1960s. . Don,t know if these pics have been posted before. See the big gum trees at the end of the strip run off. Well it was a short run off so as an extra safety measure a aircraft carrier safety catch net was placed across the track. Well Mr Withers went right through the safety net and destroyed the car but it did stop before the trees.
I’m 99% sure where Sonny’s GMC is today in Northern California. Auburn I believe. PGan knows for sure.
Funny, a message on a sidewall; "I BOG". I'm sure it's #1 Blown Open Gas, but it pretty much describes how they usually left the line in those days.
