My ‘34 sedan. This will be close to final stance. I’ll be dropping the original axle, along with de-arched springs. The ‘37 wheels-keeping it 4 bolt. Front will be 550-16 and 700 or 7.50/16 for the rear. I have a how to-I found here to adapt small bearing ford backing plate and drums to the spindles.
I don’t want to cut the firewall so I will be using 4 cylinder power. Probably a 2.3 ford with a 5 speed.
I have the grill and hood-34 being my favorite year.
I would like to convert it to a coupe at some point but figure I can get it running driving to enjoy it first.

Here is our 36 sedan my brother and I rescued from a 25 year slumber in a local garage . The car has a lot of local history. The wiring was burned , radiator and tires shot , driveshaft out and years of neglect. Two months of repairs and elbow grease and we are on the Road!

Nice car. Absolutely my favorite color on a hot rod. Any closer pictures of the firewall modification. I hate the look of a flat firewall or the distributor buried in one of these cars. I like the way they modified yours.

R & C I absolutely love that car, I bought that PHR when it first came out, 35 and 36 Willys all got 33 fiberglass noses. I've owned several 35 and 36 sedans and PU's so they have a soft spot in my heart. I still have a bunch of parts and sheet metal left. Couple of pictures of mine. I'm glad you found it.

I have been told the firewall was reversed , not sure. Someone here might verify. Here is a photo after we cleaned it up.

  7. Yes the firewall was reversed. Drill out the spot welds flip it around and put it back it. That gives you about 6 or 7 inches of recess from stock. 20200823_114255.jpg

Does anybody have other pics of the D/G '33 owned by The Barnes Bros. of NE OH?

Many thanks elgringo 71. Those boys raced locally but were on a par with the best.

Your welcome, I really enjoyed the story of there car and how it inspired a young boy and the dream never died and led to your coupe today. It’s also fantastic that you were able to see their car and that it still exists and is being driven again.

These photos came from the original owner of quicksilvers private photo album thought I would share. I am still searching for the car if anyone may have any leads! Quicksilver can also be seen in the background behind the cates 33 running the altered class.

I thought I read that the Bach's Body Shop car was sold to Chuck Finders or KS Pittman, but I could be wrong. As usual. Just ask my wife.

  18. The Bach's Body Shop car was sold to Chuck Stolze of S&S in Falls Church. Virginia and was sent to California for K.S. Pittman who had a hemi installed and eventually it was crashed. Today a wreck like that would be fixed. Not so back then. 20181007_202128.jpg 20200414_151319.jpg

    Hello,

After our foray into the Gas Coupe/Sedan Class hotly contested drag races at Lion’s Dragstrip, we spent time after 1960 to recover from the final ending and look to the future of our lives. College loomed, now that we were not building or racing any more. But, for us recovery was now in the forefront of our teenage lives.

Eventually, we recovered, got our stuff together and now were in the future life mode. But, in 1964, our friend and valuable hot rod/drag race builder asked if I would come to Lion’s Dragstrip in 1964 for the debut of his finished 1940 Willys Coupe. He was a master craftsman and builder, part of our own build and crew chief, so this finished version was immaculate to say the least.

The films were posted to other threads and can be seen at J Naki channel of the You Tube archives.

One of the added bonus features of being invited to film the 1964 debut of Atts Ono’s 1940 Willys Coupe was that the dragstrip was now the home to some of the fastest and nicest Gas Coupes and Sedans from So Cal. Here is one portion of the days entrants, K.S. Pittman and his new Willys Coupe.

It looks like K.S. Pitman's car was experiencing severe front end death wobble. They needed to take out some caster and add a steering damper.
Needless to say, he got it dialed in at some point.

    Hey F,

In 1964, I went to Lion's Dragstrip for the first time since 1960, at the invitation of Atts Ono. He wanted me to be a part of the debut of his finished Willys Coupe. I took as much film as I could of Atts Ono's 1940 Willys. But, there were some really interesting other Gas Coupes and Sedans in attendance. I have some short film clips on the You Tube channel J NAKI, if anyone is interested of other competitors that were there that day.

Here is an information run down from a Drag News article covering the big drag race meet in 1964.

"In A/GS round two, Stone, Woods & Cook (who were the only ones to break the 10s with a 9.98) should have faced Dick Harryman in Big John’s car, a race the fans were practically begging for, while K.S. was to solo. But, due to a mixup, or disagreement between teams, Harryman ended up facing K.S. or should I say was supposed to."

"Harryman rolled up to the line and, when he dropped the Willys in gear, crossed it. The car stalled and was pushed back across the line where a few attempts were made to fire it again, without priming it. Fired or not, it was a foul start and he lost. Once the Willys was up running, it was decided the pair would go for fun."

"Well, in the mix up, K.S. left on a solo and about 50 feet out, snapped a spider gear. Of course, a melee ensued, but, when the dust settled and cooler heads prevailed, Harryman soloed to a pushrod-bending 11 flat."

Because of the pro photographers trying to get the best shots available, I was relegated to the fence in front of the spectators side. But, for some reason, my 16mm color films (now in HD digital form) are the only ones in existence of the said, 1964 All Gas Coupe and Sedan Drag Meet and ensuing short clips with a story behind the photography.

This is my car, I still have it. The trunk had been welded shut, I've opened it up and it'll work fine once I can find hinges and latch.
The car now has 6.71 blower, 4 hole Hilborn on a 30 over 392 Hemi. "60 Olds rear, narrowed with Fabcraft internals. Running a smallblock 727 with Wilcap adapter.
Pat, I think I still have a letter you sent me somewhere.

Wow Glen the internet has made the world smaller. When I e-mailed you originally back when, I had a steel 34 Willys coupe and a barn full of parts. Now the car is in England (so I'm told) and I have a 36 nose, running boards and doors left, plus some assorted small stuff. You have any more pictures of yours?
