Technical switching out steering wheels

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by keepersoftheflame, Jan 10, 2022.

  1. wondering if there were any tricks to making a different brand of car steering wheel fit on to my 51-ford shoebox. Didn't know if there were any adapters or anything, was looking at using an old Pontiac wheel

  2. You won't find any commercially made adaptors, you'll have to come up with something on your own. It will depend on the differences between them as to how hard it may be. It can get involved....

You might have to use the Pontiac steering box or column.

You can sometimes switch within the parent corporation's divisions but it isn't going to be an easy go sticking a Pontiac wheel on Ford and as Steve said above there are no commercially made adapters to put any oem wheel on another vehicle. In fact the only OEM wheel I know of that even has adapters available to put it on another car is the Nardi wood wheels that came new in a number of cars new that can be put on adapters allowing them to be easily put on another car. I have one in my OT GMC truck that was originally in a Miata.

I have adapted GM wheels to Ford columns/boxes a couple times. The steering shafts on most of them are right about 3/4”. Your best bet is to find a GM shaft with the splines you need, then cut and weld that to the Ford shaft. I recommend sleeving the weld if possible, or you can put a piece of bar stock in the middle of the joint and rosette weld it too. Might make things difficult if you have a horn wire running down the center though.

Lots of really cool steering wheels in the ford mercury family . Also some early GM steering wheels had the same spline and taper as ford. 4AB86BED-8A0B-486A-8F83-35537778B7F3.jpeg E93E962D-F070-4900-9CB5-642F6688A029.jpeg 811D242E-E8D6-4F38-AE0F-782FDC8A9B8E.jpeg
