Two versions of mine that I sold in July

 

Wells, here's my bitchin little roadster. Owned it 36 years this coming 4th of July. Stll love it as much today as the day I got it.

 

This is kind of an A model.
Been beating at it for 8-9 months.
Got it from my brother, going to my uncle.
When it first showed up and now.

Inching a little closer to the goal. Got the 351W back from the machinist and waiting on main and rod bearings, a split-lip rear main seal and other odds and ends - plus warmer weather to start the assembly. Had a '29 A standard coupe during college. Wish I had kept it, bought the '57 DeSoto from my neighbor, put the 341 hemi in the coupe and rocked the block, so to speak. After 50+ years, I still think I know where that DeSoto is and fantasize about tracking down the descendants, getting a pickup and a trailer and going to get it. Then all I'd need would be a Model A, plus the cash and time (I'm about 73) to make a fantasy come true.

My ‘29 project

 

Hello,

We were looking for a great hot rod photo essays to present to the numerous magazines when we got into the business. There were some old hot rod photos that were already accepted and that gave me some encouragement to continue with something I liked doing. Traveling all over So Cal, some longer trips to Northern California and tying in those trips with a relaxing vacation with my girlfriend, who later became my wife.

My brother and I had always liked Model A coupes and sedans. A Model A coupe was going to be our first dual purpose street/strip hot rod build. We even bought an old Model A and got it running as a stock coupe. Then as we were still in the planning stages, it got sold, along with my brother’s 51 Oldsmobile sedan and there was this shiny black 1958 Impala sitting in the driveway.

But, throughout growing up and going to the drags, the Model A coupes and sedans were still our favorites. Some were street legal hot rods and some were full on race cars with motors halfway into the interior. It was a great time to be a teenager and seeing all that could be done with old hot rods.

The requirements for a magazine presentation had its own quirks, namely the strict guidelines of the editor. If he did not like the hot rod/custom motorcycle presentation, then the photo essays went into the “not used” folder for another time or a different magazine company. Sometimes those photos went to the customer as a present for his time and effort.

When my wife and I saw Lee Bright’s chopped Model A sedan delivery, we could not see past to other cars. That chopped sedan delivery had what it took to get into the mind of the editors at any magazine. So, we started out with a photographer/customer talk and that led to the photo shoot.

At the time, we had our reservations about a chopped hot rod. It was hard enough to see out of a normal old hot rod versus the newish “greenhouse” effect of our modern daily drivers. but, for some reason, this chopped sedan delivery was talking to everyone… hey, look at me. And look they did.

Lee Bright and family had a long history in early hot rod builds. Their association with the San Diego Prowlers Car Club is documented and its vast history is revered in So Cal circles. It started off as a normal sedan delivery with a few modifications. When Lee got a hold of it, then the radical look and hot rod accessories came to light, creating a completely different style.

My wife and I met Lee at a car show, then he invited us to attend one of The Prowlers of San Diego picnics by the lake one summer. It was the beginning of a great friendship and additional hot rod knowledge. When we saw the chopped 28 Ford Sedan Delivery, we both looked at each other and said… almost in unison… “WOW!” My wife has always been a hot rod/old car enthusiast, but when we both saw this chopped sedan delivery, to us, it was the epitome of hot rods as we see them in magazines and movies.

We all know the old saying...proof is in the photographs. So, all of you Northern California hot rod fans and builders... Where is Lee Bright's old 1928 Ford Sedan Delivery in its new build form? Is it somewhere in the SF Bay Area? Or back in So Cal? Inquiring minds would like to know…

 

My 29 coupe

 

Here's my 1930 model a pickup hot rod project. It's going to run an Oldsmobile 350 motor and tranny. Right now it's got a 307 mock up block in it. I'd prefer a 324 Olds motor but this will do for now.

No.. but there are members here that will turn their noses up at you... also the same people that think winning a race against a moped makes their car a "hot rod"...

 

There's a lot of things on the frame and suspension that I need to replace. The previous owner was not interested in safety much.
