Yep, same here. Just spray bomb Krylon or Rustoleum works fine. Or if you want to get fancy, the same enamel you paint the body with. I don’t think any of the drums on all the hot rods in my family have burnt their paint.

When the drums are on the car, and the car is in motion, the drums are moving. When you put them in the oven at 400 degrees, the drums are stationary. I can see where that might be a significant difference.

I wouldn't put car parts in a dishwasher in which I put dishes off of which I will eat. I used to see ads for forms that could be placed inside a hat, and then the hat went into the dishwasher to be cleaned. Although tempted to do that, I won't. I hope my head is cleaner than my car parts.

Do you recommend flipping them over after searing the bottoms to seal in the moisture? And I just made myself hungry

It’s why vinegar is also used. The carbs are actually cleaned before the wash with Finish product and vinegar. If you have a stainless unit like we have with hard water you know what inside looks like. The Finish product is a cleaner especially made for dishwashers and “degreases” pots, pans, plates etc. I’ve also cleaned small aluminum parts like alternator housings and we have never been sick. I’ve seen those hat plastic things too but never tried one.

  7. She might just be keeping a list... I think curing paint in the oven is one of those 'irreconcilable differences' you read about.

  8. Yes, and after you take them off the grille, you have to let them 'rest' for 15 minutes before proceeding.

Those hat forms really work! Put them on the top rack for best results

  11. We always just use rattle can paint on our drums. No need for high temp paint.

Yes I did. However, I've done the same with fresh sprint car engines and newly painted headers with no problem.

I will follow the recommendations of many, including the manufacturer, and not install my new ceramic-coated headers until the engine is run in. Had they only cost $99, I wouldn't be concerned.

3 min sear on each side then indirect :D

Bricks, set a few flat paving bricks in there to shield from the flame, keeps any paint off the grates, and grease off the part.
Even cheapo rattle can toughens up with a good heat cure.

I sprayed down the inside of the dishwasher with purple power then ran it, came out nice for a quickie. I always hand clean the inside of dishwashers each spring. Take the blades out, CLR, blow out with air etc.
The last one I rebuilt had the grinder pump full of hair, wife and 2 daughters in the house. But how the F does the dishwasher get enough hair in it to clog up the pump. Blew my mind.

  16. Engine break in can kill some headers and coatings.
    Im guilty

I had a pretty set of convert only, Olds 455, long headers, ceramic coated and shiny! They only looked that good on the stand. The burn-in had a bit too much timing, the headers got red hot and while they haven't rusted some 20 years later, they are no longer shiny. If you know anything about me, you know how utterly disappointing that is.

On my fathead and the Hemi I burned them in with **** manifolds rather than the shiny stuff

  18. A friend of mine will break an engine in on manifolds with a temp exhaust set up. Then install the real exhaust after a break in. Kinda sux but that’s the best way to keep the shinny ones looking decent.
I made the mistake of wrapping a set of black ones before a break in. Cooked em
    Lots of cracks.

On my flatty I actually used the red's headers i run now but I had them ceramic coated after the break in. Fool me once-shame on you, fool me twice-drinks on you. Or something like that

  20. If I ever do something super nice I plan to have the manifolds or headers porcelain coated.
We did a set at work once. Best looking exhaust I’ve ever seen

When my engine is rebuilt, I will have it run in wearing the OEM cast manifolds. I will then ask the builder to install the ceramic-coated headers and make any necessary adjustments to timing/carb. Once the engine is in the car, I will take it easy for a while, keeping an eye on the temperature.

A blower will discolor coatings too, I had these on a naturally aspirated engine for years with no defects, as soon as I bolted them on the blower motor it discolored the top third.
It wasn't lean or off on the timing either.
