  1. to me Rodder's Journal was a "book", not a magazine,...the best automotive book ever put out 4 times a year. wishing them all the best, we need them back.

Unfortunately print media is going the way of the great white buffalo. If the RJ gets its issues fixed and is up and running on all 8 cylinders I'll jump in with a subscription. Time will tell. As a side note, I received a subscription offer from Hot Rod in the mail. 2 years for 15 bucks. Decided to resubscribe. The offer said I could sign up on line but the link only offered 3 years for 20 bucks. Yes that's a better deal but 3 years is a long time in today's subscription world. Its not a lot of money but the back door up sell from 2 to 3 years is concerning.

I am a 50 year subscriber to Hot Rod and will not renew. Have you looked at it lately? It is damn near as thin as a grocery store weekly mailer and is packed with L.S. Musclecar swaps! No HOT ROD there!

Still haven't mailed in the check. Still thinking about it. Thanks for the heads up.

The problem with Hot Rod Magazine is that they have had a complete lack of direction for what... the past 30 years? I feel like they don't know what they are...

To me, Hot Rod should be contemporary and creative approaches to speed. Take a C6 Corvette and make it run harder than a new Ferrari F8 for a quarter of the budget. Take the latest mustang and make it faster than the new Vette, etc...

I'm won't re-up my Hot Rod subscription because the print is so small you need a magnifying glass to read it.

  7. What the bossman said.
Hot Rod can’t cover the realm of this place.
New ways to go fast. From LS, Coyote, electric……

Wow, this hits right on the head for me!

  9. IMHO, Hot Rod Magazine needs to ask the people that buy the magazine what they want to see, I quit buying Hot Rod a long time ago because they seemed to have lost focus. HRP

And Hot Rod Deluxe died because of ???Rod & Custom??? I would guess not enough subscribers had to have something to do with it. Not just corporate BS.
Bitching about not having a niche magazine without stepping up to subscribe when one is
    available.........
Doubtful if TRJ does fold their tent there will be nothing that comes close to replacing it.

I too haven’t picked one up in years, but car magazines generally keep up with trends, I’d imagine 500 HP carburetorated engines don’t trip the trigger for readers who have that much HP in their DD.
I’d imagine non-EFI vehicles are the minority.

    My thoughts exactly.

  13. I joined a site that caters to a certain gm fuel injected engine.
A large portion of the questions concern adding carburetors and using non-electronic transmissions.
I was kinda amazed at that.
But, why would hot rod need any flathead tech? They covered that when it was mainstream already.

  14. Thats funny! A few years back I penciled out standard carbed SBC, LS with EFi and LS with Carb for my GMC project. In the end all 3 combos ended up the same amount of coin!

Well I am one of the guys that's po'd , like I said earlier time will tell.
Here is a problem I have, most of us are subscribers and have lost our subscription money. ( I never receive a magazine ) I think TRJ has bigger problems then us. What about the money he owes his publishers, the people he rented from, heat, electricity, water and I can go on and on as a business owner myself. Those people are not going to say we'll Steve is a good guy and he is trying, like some of you are saying. They are going to sue his ass off and try and get their money. That is what is going to make it hard for him to start back up. Just my 2 cents.

And maybe, he got things squared away before he restarted.
You’re assuming the worst, I feel ya, you spent money and have nothing to show.
But did you read the pasted IG post?

This may be borderline off topic - if it gets deleted, I'll understand. There were a lot of grants and loans handed out for small businesses; maybe that's how he's able to repay / restart? Just another viewpoint. I have no opinion on TRJ one way or the other.

Shit happens, every day. Good people do their best to make it right again. God forbid some of you guys ever hitting a rough patch and needing a little compassion and understanding while you try and sort things out.
You may get as you give.........o_O

    Interesting following this thread.
Meanwhile in the last couple of years NZ Petrolhead has started a similar book to Rodders Journal.
$25 NZ plus shipping. All this just prior to the ‘pandemic’ Quality is the same, ( in my unqualified opinion ), maybe not as many pages !
The petrolhead magazine is like a newspaper and is still free. Published monthly. Picked up the latest one today at car dealership in town.
New Zealand has just exploded in population size recently and is around 5 million now.

Thanks @clem for posting that link to NZ Petrolhead.
Its so refreshing, to see a series of publications of that nature, from the other side of the world, where the car culture ( motoring ) is so diversified !
Variety is the spice of life !

I hope that this revival goes well for Mr. Coonan.
When they are up and running at full steam again I will look for my books and I will order from the store again :)

  24. are those New Zealand subscription prices good for US subscribers?

  25. NZ hijacked this thread . I’m sure it’s a great mag though :)
All I know is that I feel TRJ wouldn’t have updated us with ‘TRJ is back in 2022’ as shown below if they weren’t actually going to be.

Hot Rod Magazine lost its direction when it started calling itself "Everyone's Automotive Magazine." Pretty much excluded any self respecting hot rod hoodlums like HAMBers.

  27. This is not the first time I got burnt on a subscription, another short lived title magazine was Rodders World, I bought the first three issues off the newsstand, I subscribed and they never printed another magazine. HRP

I have that Rodders World with Fat Jack's car on the cover. I sort of assumed it morphed into American Rodder, but maybe separate.
