This car club has been running this event for 53 years, according to the flyer. My first time attending, and I had a great time. Lot's of great cars, 90% of which were HAMB friendly; perfect weather, a little chilly in the morning on the way to the meetup point, but not bad. It warmed up to t-shirt weather by noon; fantastic drive through So Cal from Long Beach on side streets all the way to La Habra (Kugel Components) through the Brea Canyon and up the 57 fwy to San Dimas to the Early Ford Store; back down the fwy to Cambra Speed Shop in Orange, and then a short drive over to Hwy 39 Event Center in Anaheim to wrap things up with a fantastic lunch served, with a bar for adult beverages, and the even center itself hosts an incredible collection of classic cars of museum quality restoration. I put > hundred miles on the ol' pickup, but no gas stop required other than the first fill up in the morning before heading to the event.

    Here's the promised photos:

Some of you might recognize the orange roadster pickup first up here: 20220227_085401.jpg 20220227_085415.jpg 20220227_085428.jpg

Notice anything unusual about this engine?

Thanks for the coverage. Any pictures of Richard Graves' latest ride?

The rest of the car was not really HAMB friendly, but I had to take photos of the aluminum metal work going on on this car at Kugel's, the hard top for this roadster was really something. For the metal shapers here:

A rare 32 B400 being worked on here. I believe this is owned by the guy that owns the collection stored at the Hwy 39 Event Center where we ended up:
    20220227_104527.jpg 20220227_104621.jpg 20220227_104627.jpg

So I was following this flatty powered 5 window on the leg from Kugel's up to the Early Ford Store in San Dimas. When we got on the fwy and started heading up the hill I wondered how he would fair keeping up with traffic; no need to worry about that, I was running between 65 to 70 the whole way, because I didn't want to lose my buddy behind me. Every time I kicked the speed up he would fall back and traffic would build up between us till I slowed down and let him catch up to me. That flatty powered 34 coupe just pulled away and I lost sight of him until we got off the fwy. I was impressed, he had to have been running 70 - 75 all the way. But it wasn't all rosy, when we pulled in to the parking lot behind the store he was leaving a trail of antifreeze along behind him.

This deuce coupe sure was nice:

At the Early Ford Store in San Dimas, this place is amazing. A feller could spend a long time in here looking through things: 20220227_113353.jpg 20220227_114149.jpg 20220227_115000.jpg 20220227_115009.jpg 20220227_115047.jpg 20220227_115051.jpg 20220227_115058.jpg 20220227_115123.jpg 20220227_115126.jpg 20220227_115131.jpg

Reilly OHV banger sitting there, getting buried under other collectible parts:

It was pretty cool to drive down the road and see a long line of hot rods and classic cars in front and behind you, and to be a part of it. Driving through traffic we all got a bit scattered, maybe 2 or 3 here, a dozen over there, etc. The only bad part of it was folks in modern cars pulling in front of or between cars, getting too close instead of respecting the cars and leaving gaps and allowing the cars to stay together. But I guess you have to expect that, right? Not everybody appreciates cars the way we do.

Thanks @Blues4U...a colorful mix and someone had a pair of covers that sure belonged elsewhere...it's not even funny really...just a walk by...I do that a lot...when I'm at many events...but this place fills the void...

    Hey B4U,

Great photos of some great looking hot rods. (and locations...) The Early Times have always been close to me. Having grown up in Long Beach, knowing some of those guys from all over that are/were club members was a good thing for a photographer and writer. I went to junior high and high school with one of their members. But, there was one thing I noticed in your story. The location of the gathering area. It looked familiar.

The West side of the Long Beach Freeway near the old Speed Engineering Shop on Harbor Ave is where you guys were gathered. Those old shops and yards just had the look of the ones close to my old house on Caspian Avenue. If it is, then the location was just on the other side of PCH from where I lived from 1953 to our final sale in 1998. It is in the area of the old (1960 era) Clay Smith Cams location, McEwen/LeGrand’s Speed Engineering, and most recently one of the Early Times’ Richard Graves’ old shop.

    upload_2022-3-1_6-3-36.png
The surface streets that were our old stomping grounds leading all the way to Bixby Knolls and beyond were well used from all of our teenage/20 something times. Even the roads leading to the City of Orange, where the shops were/are still there for old/young hot rod guys/girls.

    Jnaki

Great coverage and thanks for showing my old neighborhood at the start of the cruising road trip and visits. It is an old neighborhood with a lot of history in hot rods and drag racing. It is good to see that it can still be used for current shops intended for building and creating. Every time I happen to go back to our old home sites, it just give me a funny feeling about the area. Strange, but, perhaps, the old saying of: “You can’t go home again,” rings true…

Great photos and coverage. Thank you for taking the time to share this. Looks like a great day.

Growing up as a kid in the LA area, The Early Times car club was a very prominent fixture in the car community. I remember going to their swap meets which were held in the parking lot the Cars of the Starts Museum in Buena Park. Those were great events. Great to see the club is still very much alive and doing well.

Great pictures and a fantastic SoCal sunny day. The old 21stud did great ,but was not so great was I found out my old radiator overflow tank ( marvel mystery oil can ) inlet hose had popped off, and the bottom had rusted through. What a mess !! Well , it did last for over 15yrs. Rest in peace.
