Hey I'm originally from Massachusetts. I'm a real Masshole! Altho I spent a lot of time in the upper Midwest, Ohio and Michigan. That explains it!

Some great humor Boys, Now back to work. The engine mounts are fabbed and tacked in place. It was a tight squeeze, between the slot in the Hurst (copied) mounting brackets and the inside of the boxed frame rail, but it worked out. We decided to weld in the front crossmember, connected to the boxing plate, rather than rely on rivets. However, rivets will replace the bolts at the top of the front crossmember. We are using the latest Bob Drake mounts. I cut the holes in the frame mounts, using a Rotabroach in the mill, and the mounts have the index rim on the bottom, like the OEM mounts. On the subject of the engine, my machinist friend dropped buy Sat morning and checked the piston to wall clearance, and found it too sloppy to replace the piston and re-ring. So for now, I will leave this block in the frame, while decisions are made in the engine department. I have a 303 block that has a fresh bore to 3-7/8, and 2 sets of rods and pistons to choose from. Also, a friend called me about a tri-power that was for sale. It is the same part # as the polished one. So, as I have three of these engines, I bought it. With luck, I should have the car out of the chassis fixture, and sitting on all 4's this week. IMG_8462.JPG IMG_8463.JPG IMG_8464.JPG

I finally got the chassis on the floor, and the body set on. It can be cumbersome, to lift and move around by yourself. I whipped up a spreader bar, out of some heavy wall tube, some old trailer u- bolts, and used some shot bags to correct the balance. The one hitch I see, is the wishbone hits the starter change over, and it is going to require splitting the bones, a little. Looking the goods, page 6 of this thread mentioned a Lincoln yoke for extra width at the back of the wishbones. That way you'll get the space but keep them un-split.

    Marty --

That lavender and turquoise paint combination will never cut it for the L.A. Roadster Club. Gotta have black nowadays, not like the prescribed red of yesteryear.

So black is the new red ? I should be right with the times, with my RPU, but need to paint the COE. IMG_8352.JPG

Thanks for the reminder. I wonder how many years Lincoln used the wide yolk at the rear of the wishbone ? @Speedy Canuck are you watching ?

I believe Mercury also had a modified wishbone that didn't provide any width but added an additional 4 or 5" with a bolt on extension to accommodate the longer frontal sheet metal over the Ford.

  10. Absolutely been following this thread.
39-41 Lincoln for sure has the wider spaced yoke that you would want. I'm not sure if earlier or later years work as well... hopefully someone will chime in.

20151119_134403.jpg When I did mine the first time, I had the motor mounts where you have them. The oil pan was below the tie rod. Had to raise them up...

The problem I have with raising the front of the engine is, we are using a stock 32 K-member and trans mount. If the center of the tie rod has clearance problems with the oil pan, I can bend up a dropped tie rod. Also, raising the front will not help the clearance problem at the starter change over housing. Is that a 32 or a Model A frame you are working with ?

Those wide Lincoln yokes also will give you room to bend and droop the wishbones down for even more clearance. Would add some caster as well if you want it.

Jeff, did they sell many Lincolns in Iowa ? I am on the hunt for one.

  17. Marty, I'm sure you know this. From AA to 1941 in the Big Trucks the yoke forging is dropped to accommodate the chassis lift of them. Might give you the space you need in lou of a spacer you sometimes see. The wishbone doesn't have much travel that close to the pivot point.

Mike, I didn't know that, something to keep in mind. Now that it's on wheels and ready to roll, Jim is going to take it away and store it for a while. I appreciate him giving me a break to work on my stuff, for the time being. So it will be time to get the 29 RPU ready to race, and the COE done to haul it. My goal is to have one or both at the Portland Transmission show.

  19. You have a lot of work in front of you my friend. I'll see you there if not before. If you look close at the wishbone that's been blasted, you can see the Factory step in the forging.

You could do a similar droop to the 32 wishbone yoke if you really put the heat to it. Might need to narrow the yoke a bit to get the length back that you lose by dropping down. I’d do some mocking up to find exactly how much more clearance is needed, and if could be accomplished “below” instead of spreading “beside” your bellhousing.

  21. Is your oil pan at your scrub line? Or do you mean that your oil pan was interfering with your tie rod?

Well, Jim took it home yesterday, to give me the time to catch up on my stuff. Here are some outside shots. IMG_8510.JPG IMG_8511.JPG IMG_8512.JPG IMG_8513.JPG

If the roads weren't covered in salt and snow, I'd be adding some miles!

  26. Marty, in an attempt to be helpful I was going to post pictures of my Hurst mount that came on the 324 Olds in my 32 5 window. Got all the pictures posted and then realized that that build wasn’t this build, it’s a SBC build! But I’m thinking you might still want to see this mount because it’s so different from all the ones I’ve seen before. It mounts on the usual bolts on the front but then also has an extra tab that uses the lower bolts on the timing cover.
    Check it out… BABD1966-4C08-4132-8B54-790DE1A15A79.jpeg B7B8AFC7-7017-41FD-A5E4-408B1E5D9789.jpeg 50C55B78-848D-4920-9C12-5F3BC9977B21.jpeg 6AAC0F04-C82F-49E5-A8AC-6BCC5DE2E411.jpeg A773525E-DE77-4D3A-8ABA-697A6E3C0185.jpeg 92AA578D-958A-45D4-ABB8-66C1324B662C.jpeg 0FBD0083-5B6A-4558-B7A1-976E1AE21227.jpeg Maybe we should start a “Hurst Mounts” thread?

I haven't seen that one, and maybe a Hurst mounts thread would very informative. The one's I used on Jim's had an extra tab that connects a large bolt 90 degrees from the crankshaft. Thanks for posting,

I'd like to a thread like that, but one suggestion, make it a Hurst Type Motor Mount thread
I've got one that I'm sure Hurst never made but copies their style.
