Hot Rods The Cast Off Truck Build

So, some of you remember my nephew building the 58 Apache in the Okie Apache thread. He has been bugging me to build a flatty powered pickup. We have the 35-36 Fords in our bloodline. He was destined to build one.

I had asked around about flathead projects and my buddy @guthriesmith told me about a guy he met may have a project. A guy was building a street rod out of a 37 Ford coupe. He had ordered a Pete and Jakes ch***is. I called him back about 6 months ago and told him when he pulled the body to give me a call. That call happened last week. Today we went and picked up the ch***is.

Colby has been working for a restoration shop after school and is learning a lot. He saved up his money and this was all him. No mom and dad money funding it. This will be built out of leftover parts we have laying around.

It’s a decent frame. Has rust in the usual areas. We started it and it busted right off. Not a bunch of leaks either.

He has been buying the hard to find parts like the grille etc. He bought a really nice grille at an antique mall in OKC.

Glad Colby was able to get that 37 ch***is. Should make for an easier start than trying to throw lots of parts together.

Nice! Looking forward to seeing the progress! What are the exhaust looking tubes coming out from under the radiator?

 

Motor looks to clean to be original, must have been rebuilt at some time is my guess, good score !

 

You don't find deals like that up here anymore! That frame looks to be in great shape. Looking forward to seeing this come together.

 

Dual horns.

The motor looks like it has been gone through. The guy handed us a set of wrenches for the Johnson adjustable lifters. He said...I don't know what these are for, but the guy I bought the car from said I would need them. It has new tires as well.

 

What a great starting point! Did he get the steering column and ***orted parts? I can't imagine the po using them for a street rod...

 

He did. He had to pony up a little for the original banjo wheel. It was a nice piece.

We didn’t know it until we started to deal On the banjo, but he was a retired firefighter and worked at the firehouse with Colby’s dad.

The horn and headlight switch worked as well.

So...um, I couldn't help but notice, it seems the shifter may be pointing the wrong way. Is that an old speed shifting secret? 3 reverse gears and one forward? Allows for underhood test drives while adjusting the carb? Just trying to learn, or help

 

That is what engages the turbonator.

 

I agree this is a great starting point.

Are the wide 5 caps chrome plated? The only all-stainless ones Ive ever seen are the "spider" ones that also cover the artillery spokes. Are these some kind of option I just never noticed before?

 

Those are the twin turbo inlets.
Or maybe twin 50-cals?

Seriously- with all those old Ford parts, that'll be a cool build !

Those are pretty sure those are aftermarket stainless caps.... I dig 'em.

Prolly needs a 390 Cad to make it get out of its own way....

 

I bet the street rod guy was really happy he found someone that wanted that "old junk". I've been at the right place at the right time to get some "old junk" as well. Makes for two groups of happy people, the one's that want it gone, and the one's that want it.

You guys might be the first people he calls when he is ready to do the next street rod too.
