History What would hot rodding look like if the '"pinnacle" cars didn't exist?

  2. This alternate universe already exists. A parallel existence along with many. A quantum leap away.
What does it look like? I’m sure it’s some version of a bizarro world. Looks similar but completely different. But it’s just one of many. Or maybe it’s all just different dreams existing in the id of some sleeping creatures just moments away from the alarm going off Thanos finger snap….vapor
Synapses, chemicals, impulses, a bit of cheese.or thought residue from watching the Twilight Zine just before dozing off.
But never fear. Every universe has a small fringe group of hoodlums modifying what ever transportation fodder exists.
remember, in a Galaxy far away, a very long time a go, a kid was customizing space ships.

It's just the value / nostalgia/ group think that we, as hot rodders place on a specific car that makes it iconic. Everyone says 1932 ford's are the top car, so they are, very few us were there when they were first being hot rodded, so it's a passed down legacy.

What if the design team at Ford went from 1931 to 1933 design and skipped 1932. The focus would just be on another car.

It already exists outside our hot rod world, we're just not tuned in.
Japanese and European Import crowd has pinnacle cars
    Australia has pinnacle cars
    4x4 crowd has pinnacle vehicles
    There's a whole group that worships 3rd gen cam*ro's.
    Etc

My opinions have changed over time. any V8, rwd, straight, complete, rust free 2 door of a certain time period has appeal to me now. So many available parts and so much info readily available now to make something fun, reliable, fast etc.

  10. As long as there are guys who see cars through a different lense, there would be Hotrods and Customs. If the 32 Ford, 49, Merc didn't exist, etc, something else would have taken their place. That's why you see 50 Plymouth, or 34 Chevy, Edsels at car shows today. Guys will go with what they have available to them. And then, there will always be some guys who will modify them more than the rest. Look in other countries, like Japan. No 49 Mercs or 32 Fords, so the modified the cars they had.

Maybe you're right Dad. And maybe I'd have a better chance of fucking Mary-Ellen Rogers if I had a back seat.

Stance, proportions, flow, speed, sound are all visceral reactions. If you nail it on any car it looks "better". If you get it wrong......well.

It's still a preference or an era, big/ little tires, channeled, chopped. I can appreciate many builds on the same body style. But when it's wrong you just know it.

I'm sure we've all seen 32 ford's that were good solid cars but didn't hit the mark because of stance or proportions or some awful 18" wheels with rubber band tires, or should I say "rims" :D

  26. Do you guys have any idea how cool it is to have the work of Richard Feynman, Michael Moorcock, with a little nod to Schrodinger, and even that old Greek dude Chrysippus being mentioned in a dumb hot rod related thread? It gives me hope for humanity that there are others out there taking theoretical science and standing it up against the tangible to elicit deep thought.

And the geek in me LOVES the Star Wars reference! ;)

It makes you understand that there is a lot more going on here at the HAMB than just what shows up on the front page. I love you guys for this. It made my morning.:cool::cool:

Holy hell! I never gave that a thought!!! Without Warner Brothers, most of us would have never been introduced to the finer things, like opera! :D

Didn't he get his ass whooped at a "garden party" or something? Well... if not, he should have. :D:D:D

...Many hate this Show/Hotrod but it really was a nod to the Ratfink early 60s in many ways and It's Hotrod Art really...Jim Street was a Designer, Customizer, Artist...and truly came up with a Wild Thing...

RIP Norm...I wonder if anyone ever asked him what he thought of the Street iteration?...On that note RIP Jim Street...

Two words Rat Rod.(not crap rod or shot rod mind you) Bear with me. The movement brought about the acceptance of non pinnacle cars and different build styles. Ramblers, Hudson's, Studebakers, 4 door custom mom cars, the antithesis of what was accepted as cools, because the Pinnacle cars are out of reach pricewise. IShudder to think of the 50s without Harley Earl, no tailfins. Look at the independents, Kaiser and Studebakers were outside the norm of the big 3 in design, and played catch up until they failed. But you could have a Star coupe with the Iconic supercharged Kaiser six, for example instead of a 32 Ford, or Sam Harris could have chopped a Hudson instead of a Merc.
