That much leverage w/disc brakes, an a dropped axle... A lot! Single leaf...! Be like front wheel hop..
Un friggin believable , no common sense what so fuckin ever .. Truck should be pulled off the road and who ever installed that axle locked up for awhile . No regard for their own safety or the public's safety. Give hot rodders a bad name
Yikes! If that wasn't done to make a roller, hope you're fixing all that. Can it even be steered with the tires sunk into the fenders that far?
With that stack of old hardware spacing the tie rod to the flat steering arms, the ends will have plenty of leverage to twist on the flat steering arms and get a good death wobble going if it hits a bump or pothole. That is if hitting a hole doesn't bottom it out and tear things loose anyway!
Had a friend with a 55 chev pick up with this sort of set up , 7 inch drop , everything below the scrub line . Blew a tire on the freeway 70mph skidded across 4 lanes of traffic, managed to keep it off the concrete center medium ,skidded back across 4 lanes of traffic and dug in on the dirt shoulder , Lucky to be alive , and not cause any other accidents . Had it towed home and his fix was a skid plate welded under the truck . What a knob ....
- seems like there is a thread here that states the stance is everything - some say that safety is for sissies - just going out the driveway would be a challenge - who has a pack of unfiltered smokes to do some clearance checking with?
I guess there are several ways to achieve said stance in a more mechanically certifiable manner however this fails to achieve that... I sure hope the original poster chimes in as what's the point here.
Dont know who would have bent/stretched this axle this much , but hate to think if something broke , if it may come back to haunt them !!!!
Unfortunately we will all be painted with the same stick when he does wipe out a family out I sure hope whoever took the picture has enough sense to point out just how unsafe this front end is .
I went to look at a shoebox Ford a while ago , clean looking car , had a steering rack installed in a frame that sat below the scrub line . took it for a drive and hit a bump and the rack hit the road the car jerked violently! Made a left turn and the rack hit again and I pretty much did a u-turn End of road test . Owner did not understand why I didn’t even want to negotiate.
Hey @armymike , your profile says you own a '31 Chevy truck. Please tell us it's not the one in the pic. If it is, I hope that you just got it, and that you are going to fix it before you drive it.
Early Chevy manuals make a point of saying that on no account should heat be used when straightening their front axles. So presumably heat has an adverse effect on the metal, is it possible to drop a cold axle even a tiny bit? That much drop took a whole lot of heat!
Everything aside, im suprised they were able to maintain that much track width up front with that big of a drop. The wheels dont look like they have a crazy offset or anything and the tire is still right out near the edge of the fender.
This Thread is starting to remind me of the 4dr Vicky Thread, post a Thread with no words, it'll be 4 pages of wtf's and no sign of the original poster but we shall see...4 posts since 2013...hmmm...I echo @twenty8, @armymike what is beyond the shock value here, a fix?
Perhaps he was expecting a more positive response... That said, the form follows function line of thinking, is often lacking trying to be "period correct", and is replaced with a "it is better to look good, than to feel good" mentality.
My thoughts are he called it a Death Trap himself via the title backed up with not one iota of what he was wanting out of this...we are not mind readers here. I hope he reads this thread and does respond. It may save lives. If he's offended, and doesn't respond, I hope at a minimum he realizes what he called it is in fact what it is and he takes it in to a reputable shop and has it thoroughly looked over for safety as whomever is responsible needs a knowledgeable assessment of their work and a fix executed...
