C4's already have a neutral safety switch on the box.

On the right side of the shift arm shaft there's two jam nuts that allow you to adjust the friction (drag) of the shifter. It might be set a little too tight, or in the case of 32CDAN it might have been set too loose.

I have worked with both and installed a few Lokars. Unfortunately I don't have any input for the OP...seems like it's one of those situations where someone needs to put their eyes and hands on it to see what the problem might be.

I have not reached the point yet where I would build a hot rod for myself with an auto and don't know that I ever will...and if I did, a column shift would be my first choice...BUT if I had to pick between the two, I would pick Lokar every time. I really like that you can not move the Lokar handle without pressing the button in the knob. On a Gennie, it seems far to easy to bump the handle just the wrong way and kick it into gear, out of neutral, or bypass neutral all together and go from drive to reverse. It's conjecture and second hand, but I have heard more than one instance of that exact thing happening. The Lokar with the shift knob adapter isn't pretty, but I'd pick it.

Not all Ford C4 equipped models came that way.
Floor shifted cars definitely did but column shifted cars didn’t.

The 73 Maverick I pulled the transmission from was a column shift car.

They have a neutral safety /back up switch mounted on the steering column.

    Here’s the column mounted switch.

I have one in my 30 Model A, impressed with the quality and shifting.

  9. Nice to have the current owners drop in here and comment. I hope this means that they will continue to be around for a while. I'll have to check out the site to see what may have changed.
By the way, both Gennie and Lokar supply adapters that attach to the top of the shift lever, right under the knob, which eliminates any knob with a top button. With the "adapter", you can use any buttonless shift knob that you want that has the 3/8" matching thread. In other words, you don't have to change the whole shifter to roll with an Ol' School, no-button knob. Don't do that!!! I've sold and installed many a shift knob for both shifters.
I'm off to check the Gennie store. I'll edit and update as needed. ;)

As this picture shows (thanks Blue One) The Gennie shift pattern is virtually the same as a factory column
shifter. It has to be pulled sideways before pulling up or down, merely bumping into gear would be pretty difficult.

  11. I've had a Gennie in my truck for close to 25 years and about 40K miles, and never had a glitch. NEVER went into a gear that wasn't consciencely selected, and doesn't rattle (which I've been told Lokars do). I'm totally happy with it and I hope the new ones are the same high quality as mine.

I can't get the safety neutral right on mine either. But it is far and away a better shifter than the Lokar.
