Well that's a start...

 

I attended trade school 3 different times , auto mechanics , welding , power engineering . I finally finished State Pen , with a degree in BMF . Ha ha ! I once was ask on a job interview , “ What school did you attend to get your engineers license ? “ My answer was “ Dead Man’s Steam School and State Pen , “ as I walked out the door . I knew working for a Gentleman that was more worried about a paper than knowledge would never make it for me in the pipeline business . It’s so great to see younger ones wanting to and learning the skill to keep us going . Your doing great work , with them !

 

Thanks for the update! I've wondered a few times how your projects are coming along.

 

Nothing I can post here at the moment.
We are doing a couple of experiments on mixing filler on a scale Vs not mixing it on a scale. We’re checking to see how it affects work time and curing at different temps.

I’d also like to shoot some lacquer a supplier I know sells.
Would like the students to see the difference.
we sprayed single stage enamel metallic last year. We compared it to base/clear metallic. Was quite a lot of difference.

I too am a vocational school student. It definitely helped me. I've said for years not everyone can have and office job...There has to be someone to build them.

Teach your student how to use an airbrush, definitly a budding talent there.

 

Anthony, on the colourful side of the tank did they use felt pens? if so that's cool! actually cool anyway!

the colorful one is 2 female students. One draws well, the other is a creative doodler.
The other tank is one of my guys. Loves to sketch. Told me a local tattoo artist wanted him to come by and work with him on sketch techniques

 

Thanks. I’m no artist. But I noticed a student doodling a really cool looking pattern. Showed her some sharpie art online and handed her a gas tank. Same with the other kid that sketches.
I’m going to have to get a decent airbrush now and real pin stripe brushes.
I’d like to see how they do with these in their hands. We’re building an OT mini truck. The kid that sketches laid out a killer graphic on the roof.
These are 10th grade students. Hopefully they’ll keep hanging around.

 

I took auto shop in San Diego in 1958. California had a special program for vocational teachers without a college degree. Our shop teacher was a NASCAR mechanic whose wife needed to live in a different climate. One other thing, all of my shop teachers wore a shirt and tie under their shop coats. Times were different then. Hats off to Anthony for his obvious concern for the success of his students.

One of my friends just got a new position at the local HS teaching auto shop and industrial arts. When he told me about the new job I thought of guys like you on here. I cannot imagine a better vocation than teaching hungry minds something that doesn't involve wifi, politics and screen time. Good on you!

Tell your friend to ignore the politics/school system drama . Be aware, don’t get caught up in it.
It’ll kill ya.
tell him to be straight with the students. No BS. They can spot it and get enough of that already.
If in doubt, error on the side of the student.
Listen to em. Most us old folks don’t.
Teaching is kinda like owning a shop but without having to pay the bills.
I consider my self a facilitator as much as an instructor. I’ll search for natural talents and teach from there.
Our state has a course for seniors called “Sr Career path”. It’s a pot luck semester.
The students and I determine what that is. If a sr wants to work with the automotive, welding, whatever instructor, we’ll set that up. Whatever skills they want to do, we do. Fun class.

 

Anthony your style of teaching, honesty with students, and recognizing their innate talents is pretty well how I taught for 38 years. Still do the on-call thing as the money is very good but miss having my own classes. And I agree 100% about the school politics. In addition I’d warn anyone teaching that it’s always wise to smile and nod in agreement when admin comes up with a “bright idea” but then go and do it correctly!

Yep. Our automotive instructor left it as the student built it. Sometimes we let ‘em mess up.
Internal mistakes were corrected as they happened.

 

That’s the only way they learn sometimes. I think the valve covers are on the wrong sides too. At least compared to my 65 GP 389.

 

Possible. It’s a students engine. He disassembled it at home. It’s took him nearly a school year to get it back together. He’s lost bolts, bought the wrong headers, didn’t take pics or bag and tag like he was taught.
We liked to never got him to understand “clean”
Everything has to be clean!!!
Hopefully he’s learned something. When he lost something, he had to buy it. If it wasn’t clean enough, clean it again. Not assembled with the correct bolts? get the correct bolts.

 

At least you taught him the right way! I wish I’d have had teachers like you when I was in school. Good job! You know I got dyslexia being that he has stuff backwards and other stuff. Wonder if he maybe doesn’t have a problem?

The first rule of survival, "Don't step on the man's d**k." When we changed principals, we'd pull in our horns, see what was important/unimportant to them, then it was business as usual.

 

If a student comes to you asking, "Is this good enough?", they already know the answer. They're just hoping for a pass.
